Illustration of King Street with pedestrian priority by Kerry Thompson
dandyhorse August newsletter
Summer is in full swing!
Summer has rounded the third turn of the seasonal track and dandyhorse is getting cyclists geared up for the final stretch with great features from our latest issue. Issue 12 of dandyhorse is centered around equity and has a LOT of great cycling stories (many now on the dandyBLOG) including; What would King Street look like if people were the priority? (image above); plus our interview with professional para-cyclist Jaye Milley, we also have an introduction to Ontario's new 470-km Greenbelt Route; a unique perspective on cycling culture from a Mennonite mechanic; an interview with TD CEO Tim Hockey on the bank's involvement in Toronto's Bike Share program; an interview with fellow cyclist and social justice activist, Desmond Cole, a VISION ZERO graphic illustrating a road safety plan for Toronto aimed at reducing fatalities; our Heels on Wheels interview with Lucy DeCouture, and, of course, the fabulous fashion feature and cover shoot for issue 12: "Heavy Metal in the Bike Lane" with photos by Mike Ford. Read our interview with Priya Panda, lead singer of the band Diemonds, here.
Whew! That's a lot of dandy material. Our NEW issue of dandyhorse can be found at Urbane, Sweet Pete's, Bikes on Wheels and Hoopdriver. You can buy it online here and at these independent book shops.
In July, we also enjoyed a new blog series; Emily and Tammy’s great commute with Emily commuting by bike for the first time (with thanks to Brodie bikes for the loaners). And we continued our popular traveller series with Alix Aylen's Exiting Toronto by bike.
We also published an op-ed by dandy editor, Claire McFarlane, which countered Globe columnist Margaret Wente's ridiculous question: Where are all the female cyclists?
The dandyBLOG will keep you informed of what's happening cycling-wise around Toronto, for example; check out some of our posts of photos from Toronto's fourth annual Vintage Bike Show. Stay tuned to the dandyBLOG for more biketastic events to come, including our fundraiser!
