Thank you so much for being a subscriber to my newsletter. Since you last heard from me, I was in Philadelphia for the annual SAMA Conference and my work was published in a new mosaic book. I finished one of my hospital projects and am getting close to being done with my second one, a tribute to my mom.
New Work and SAMA Conference
6x10", stained glass, millefiori, seed beads, glass fusions
In March I attended my seventh SAMA Conference (Society of American Mosaic Artists) in Philadelphia. I created the mosaic above, Waiting on the Night, for the mosaic salon, which was bid on and sold. I also went on two mosaic bus tours to some amazing locations with gorgeous mosaics, including the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, where I did a back bend to take this fun panoramic photo! The rabbit was my favorite detail of one of the mosaics there.
Two more fun mosaics from the tours:
To see more of my trip and the many beautiful mosaics I saw on the tours, check out my Facebook Page here.
I also mentioned last newsletter that the mosaic I created for the MAPEI Invitational would be exhibited at the conference with the other 19 invited artists. In February this exhibit was in Las Vegas for the International Surface Event, and in April, the mosaics traveled again to Orlando, FL for the Coverings Show, Global Tile & Stone Exhibits. They will eventually be permanently installed at MAPEI's headquarters in Florida and Milan, Italy. To see all 20 mosaics, visit SAMA's Facebook page here.
Children's Hospital Project
Last month, my mosaic, Joshua Tree, was installed at Children's Hospital Central California in Madera. It is 20x30" and made with stained glass and millefiori. The design was inspired by my father who would take my siblings and I there on the way to visit my great grandmother who lived in Yucca Valley. Camping and being out in nature is something my dad loves probably more than anything, and my favorite memories of him in my childhood always involve him sharing this love of the outdoors with us. I hope my mosaic is uplifting to the children who visit.
Cottage Hospital Project
I am close to finishing my mosaic that will be installed in the Sacred Space room at Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital in California. There are three panels, totaling 24 square feet, depicting the daylilies and Jacaranda my mother so loved. I had a different design planned but after my mom's passing in 2013, I was inspired to create something for her. It comforts me to know that this tribute to her may give comfort to others.
My Work Published in New Book
I was invited by Bonnie Fitzgerald to contribute a mosaic and an artistic tip to her newly published book, Guide to Mosaic Techniques. The mosaic published is the one below from my children's book, The Night Before Christmas. If you want to know the tip, you're going to have to buy the book! Buy it here.
Other Art I Enjoy
Just wanted to share one of my long time favorite artists, Marc Chagall. I had a tough time trying to pick my very favorites, so I'll just share these that he did of himself and his first wife, Bella. I love the love!
"If I create with my heart almost all my intentions remain. If it is with the head – almost nothing. An artist must not fear to be himself, to express only himself. If he is absolutely and entirely sincere, what he says and does will be acceptable to others." - Marc Chagall
Thank you so much for following along on my artistic journey, and if you think others would be interested in reading about my art, feel free to share my newsletter.
Warm regards, until next time,
