Dear Underdog,

I spent many years looking for the perfect online game for me and I didn’t think I’d find it in a wall of white text. It’s a classic text-based multiplayer fantasy game from the ‘80s that actually gives your “toon” the chance to play their role — the added bonus? Most games are free to play. It’s all I ever wanted.

Among the many multi-user dungeons (MUDs) that still exist today, GenesisMUD, lovechild to a group of Swedish college students in Chalmers University, stands out for being the very first LPMud. “LP” stands for Lars Pensjö, the original author of the LPC programming language, and one of the game’s founders. To pay homage to him, the game also features him as the omnipotent: someone who welcomes toons upon character creation and reincarnates them after every death.

At 31 years, the game still runs with a growing player-base — new and old players alike. From what started out as a single domain named ‘Sparkle’, it has evolved into a 25,000-room realm they call a “donut,” with domains and guilds heavily influenced by several literary works such as Dragonlance, Forgotten Realms, Lord of The Rings, and A Wizard of Earthsea. With these domains come original ones created by the many programmers, “wizards” as they call themselves.

Recently, I’ve been playing the role of a Valar-driven caster that spends most her days in the guild library writing books about herbs. Some of my friends like to earn money and grind to Myth (the highest mortal level in the game), others enjoy socializing, while the rest are still in search of the role they want to play. If you’d like to join in on the adventure, you can play and learn more about the game here: genesismud.org.
Love,
Franchette
