EXPLORE OUR ARCHIVES: FOREST GAYTE PRIDE COSTUMES
In the early morning of the 28th June 1969, police raided a gay bar in New York called The Stonewall Inn. This sparked a week of protests for LGBT+ rights, which gave new power and visibility to the gay liberation movement. The first Pride marches were held in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles on the first anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising - over the years, Pride has grown to become an international event celebrating acceptance, unity, and freedom.
Forest Gayte Pride began in 2017, as a grassroots community project. It has now become a highlight of the community calendar, bringing people together to celebrate and marvel at the amazing costumes worn by the marchers. These costumes were made by Hazel Goldman, a community artist from Forest Gate.
