The Friends of the Library of Hawai‘i (FLH) is pleased to announce the 67th Annual Booksale, sponsored by Hawai‘i State Federal Credit Union (HSFCU), from June 21 - June 29, 2014 at the McKinley High School Cafeteria. At Hawai‘i’s largest used booksale, you can choose from over 150,000 books in every category imaginable!
Join the nearly 20,000 readers of all ages and backgrounds who converge on the McKinley High School cafeteria for the FLH Annual Booksale – 10 days of bargains and a selection to rival any bookstore. Be the first to shop at the booksale at one of the following two preview sales:  FLH members' preview sale on Thursday, June 19, 5-9 p.m. and HSFCU members' preview sale on Friday, June 20, 5-9 p.m. FLH members may attend both preview sales. Merchandise is added daily so plan on visiting the booksale often!

In addition to books, the booksale will feature a selection of CDs, DVDs, VHS, comics and manga, and many more hard-to-find items. Back by popular demand is the eclectic selection of donated art. A new section, "Curious Books," features hand selected books that are too good to be missed. In this section, YOU WILL find first editions, tattered books of great interest, and fun books with quirky titles. A catalogue of FLH’s rare and collectible books will be open for inspection. All books in the catalogue are available for purchase.
The Renée B. Fisher Foundation has once again provided funding for 100 teachers in the McKinley and Farrington Complexes. Through this program called “Books for Teachers,” eligible teachers can purchase books for their classrooms at the FLH Annual Booksale.
FLH year-round volunteers sort through and price the books for the booksale sale. An additional 400 volunteers staff the sale each year. All of these volunteers work tirelessly to support the Hawai‘i State Public Library System. Proceeds from the FLH Annual Booksale support statewide programming such as the ever expanding Summer, Fall, and Spring Reading Programs. The Summer Reading Program includes programs for every age group– Children, Teens, and Adults–so the entire ‘ohana can participate together. The 2014 Summer Reading Programs will be expanded from five to six weeks allowing for an additional week of fun and learning!
Mahalo nui loa to the Hawai‘i State Federal Credit Union, our title sponsor, as well as to our other valued donors who include, Bess Press, CoreGroupOne, HMS Host, L&L Hawaiian Barbecue, Pension Services Corporation, Renée B. Fisher Foundation, Rezents & Crowley, and Safeway.

Volunteer at the Annual (McKinley) Booksale

June 21 - 29, 2014

Having volunteered on the FLH Annual Booksale committee for many years, Nobu Kiwada and Stephanie Rezents became co-chairs in 2007. Stephanie and Nobu oversee the details of the state's largest booksale and FLH's largest fundraiser. In addition to their full-time jobs, they volunteer year-round for planning this 10-day mega booksale each summer. Additionally, they are both booksale sponsors.

Ms. Rezents commented about Mr. Kiwada, "Nobu is my idea of the perfect volunteer. He's very focused on getting the job done and almost never complains. Most importantly - he knows how to "play well with other children."

Within the next year, FLH operations will be displaced from the Pohukaina Warehouse. The Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) has granted FLH use of a triple-wide portable building located next to its Kaka‘ako Makai warehouse, but this building is in need of some major TLC and reconfiguring.

The Rotary Club of Honolulu has agreed to take on the renovation of the building as a community service project with Kirk Hovious spearheading the project. Once the renovation is complete, FLH will be able to relocate part of its operations to this site. Thank you, Rotary Club of Honolulu, for your much needed assistance with this project!

Links to Literacy at Kapolei Golf Club

The 21st annual Links to Literacy tournament will take place Friday, October 24, 2014 at Kapolei Golf Club. As part of an exciting new partnership with Pacific Links, the move will help increase our support for Hawai‘i’s public libraries. The tournament is the second of our two major fundraisers. Businesses in Hawai‘i use Links to Literacy to reward staff and valued customers, as well as to invite mainland contacts to enjoy a day of golf on one of Hawai‘i’s top courses.

The tourney is staffed by 50-100 volunteers, including library staff taking a vacation day to show their thanks for the players’ support and members of FLH Library Affiliate groups. The day of golf is followed by a delicious banquet and silent auction. This year will also feature an online auction. To participate in Links, sign up for a team, or donate to our auction go to our Links to Literacy webpage and find out more.
