Restoration:Back to Basics

A couple of presentations at recent conferences have provided useful reminders on the importance of two basic components of restoration projects:
  1. A thorough planning process; and
  2. Scientific evaluation of the individual factors influencing restoration success.

At the 2015 Native Prairie Restoration & Reclamation Workshop, a presentation from Tannas Conservation Services Ltd. reviews the process of restoration from establishing project goals and timelines to implementation and monitoring. The importance of understanding site conditions, available resources, and the relationship between project design and project objectives is discussed.

paper presented on Teck Coal Ltd.'s Elkview Operations at the BC Technical and Research Committee on Reclamation 2014 Symposium reviews how efforts have been made to "identify and control as many links in the 'reclamation chain' as possible". This has allowed refinement of re-vegetation prescriptions to work towards meeting mine reclamation objectives.
