Welcome to the October Monthly Update with the latest information on HAP UK & Ireland's work.
Middle East Programme
Parts 2 & 3 EMDR Training of the second cohort

In October, 21 of the 28 participants who did the EMDR Part 1 Training in May completed the one week Parts 2 & 3 training in Istanbul.

Participants who hadn’t been able to attend it were still in Syria and it was difficult to travel out although one or two hardy souls made it and will be returning, one to Alleppo where much of the fighting has been taking place.

Many of those who were able to attend had difficult journeys but also stories of how EMDR had helped them in their work.   One of them said  “If we were not professionals, we would say it was magic!”

For them to be able to alleviate suffering so effectively helps them feel like there is hope. We also heard from some of the participants from last year’s training group who are doing great work in the refugee camps in Syria. We are working on the idea that the next training might be held in Gaziantep near the border which would be more accessible to mental health professionals working in both the camps and the Syrian communities outside the camps. HAP UK & Ireland is extremely grateful to Mona Zaghrout and her team who travelled from Palestine to provide the training in Arabic at a time when things were difficult for them at home and travel not easy. 

Financially and logistically EMDR training in the Middle East is challenging but the feedback and impact of HAP’s work there underlines the need for this programme to continue and expand.
HAP UK & Ireland Treasurer Vacancy

Our current Treasurer, Shawn Katz, is stepping down at the end of our financial year, the end of December after 5 years as a Trustee and in this post.  If you would like to help HAP UK & Ireland in a more active way, perhaps this is something you have experience of/would consider doing.  Trustees hold regular meetings, usually every 6 weeks via Skype. You will manage the banking and keep tabs on expenditure as well as oversee income from membership, donations and publications.  The accounts are not complicated and other Trustees also provide necessary information.  An Annual Report for the AGM is also produced by the Treasurer.
Fundraising at the York Conference

HAP UK Trustee Sanja Oakley and volunteer Judy Mellor managed to raise over £500 for HAP UK & Ireland at the Northern Annual Conference by selling publications and a Prize Draw.  Many thanks to them for their efforts and to all those who contributed.
Refresh of the HAP UK & Ireland web site

In October, our website was refreshed with a new, sharper look. There is a new header (used on this Update too) and the overall layout has been simplified following a review by someone experienced in Charity Website design.

We have also added more information about our Project Work and our place in the wider HAP Community.
One of the reasons for this change has been our decision to widen HAP's profile in the charity world in order to help raise more funds for our work in so many places of need.
