This past year: At East Coast Environmental Law, we are grateful to serve communities in Atlantic Canada. We advocate for better environmental protection and sound decision-making through public legal education and by working with government and policymakers to ensure that the public interest and community concerns are reflected in environmental decision-making.
As a public resource, we offer a number of services, including legal advice, referrals, and access to legal and environmental education. We are the only organization on the east coast of Canada with a mandate that focuses on free and accessible education around environmental law. That mandate translates into an active legal research program, innovative materials and conversations to help folks facing issues on the ground and a whole team of law students and new lawyers learning about the real value of public interest law.
The year ahead is an important one. As the 2019 election approaches, we will endeavor to keep the public engaged and up-to-date, while maintaining pressure on our members of government to make responsible and informed environmental decisions. As a non-partisan organization we diligently monitor proposals for new or amended  environmental laws and the implications that these changes may have on the public.

There is a critical role for East Coast Environmental Law in 2019. With your help we will ensure that this beautiful, diverse piece of Earth called Atlantic Canada is part of the conversation when environmental laws are being created or struck down and when government is making choices that impact us all. We believe that transparency, accountability and justice are at the foundation of all good decisions.
Now more than ever, we ask for your support because it is that support that will make the difference.

As the first environmental law charity established in Atlantic Canada, we have built a strong reputation over the past 12 years as fierce and credible advocate for the development and fair application of innovative and effective environmental laws.

This year, we welcomed Ecojustice to Halifax, forging a strong and open working relationship to maximize the effects of our combined efforts. Ecojustice’s presence in the region will create more opportunities for environmental litigation in Atlantic Canada, while we will continue to focus our energy and expertise on the work that we do passionately: educating the public and enhancing community capacity to take action for environmental and climate justice.

At ECELAW, our utmost priorities are to:
  • engage people in environmental law and policy, including law reform;
  • create legal resources to inform politicians, decision-makers, environmental organizations, community groups, and members of the public;
  • make environmental law, which can be complex, obscure, and difficult to navigate, more accessible; and
  • provide direct on the ground environmental law support to communities, public interest organizations and individuals.
Thank you for your continued support!
We look forward to advocating for you and your community throughout the coming year.
