Bay County Tour of Homes is Sunday October 14th!

Autumn is a wonderful time of year with changing leaves, cooler temperatures, football, great food and fun and... the annual Bay County Historical Museum Tour of Homes! This year the tour is scheduled on October 14th from 11:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is a great lineup of homes to see, including Bill and Carol's home at 1420 5th Street.  Visitors get to see the inside of these wonderful homes that are so chararcteristic of the amazing architecture of Bay City. This year the lineup besides 1420 5th, includes 2221 Center Avenue, 1600 5th, 1609 5th, 803 N McLellan, 801 Pendleton, 2 superb condos at the Boathouse at 1111 N Water and the St. Boniface Church at McKinley and Lincoln. Tickets are priced $12 in advance or $15 the day of the tour. For tickets, visit one of the shops around the county that are selling them or stop in to the Museum at 321 Washington Avenue or call them at 893-5733.

Mansions Lost

Bay County's rich history of architecture includes some stories that feature mansions that did not survive the wrecking ball. One such example is the Wells Mansion at the site where Wells Court currently is. The photo above is from 1948 just before the home was taken down. The all-brick structure included the carriage house in the lower left corner of the photo. That carriage house became 901 Wells Ct. that was recently listed and sold by Bill Branigan. The mansion was so big that now the court and 3 other homes take up the space that was once occupied by the impressive home.

The William Clements Mansion is another of Bay City's grand homes that is now lost. This magnificent home was situated at the corner of Park and Center Avenues. It was so large that it had a two-story library, attended by a full-time librarian. The library's books were donated to the University of Michigan which now has the William L. Clements Library on the campus.

Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy Publishing a Free Field Guide!

Call SBLC at 891-9986 to get your copy!

Bill Branigan and Consumers Energy sponsored the 2012 SBLC Nature Photography Contest. All the entries are in and the winners will be announced on November 7th at the Wirt Library in downtown Bay City. The most recent big news is that the Conservancy is publishing 5000 copies of the Saginaw Basin Field Guide and it is free of charge to those that request it. The full-color lavish guide shows readers where the preserves are located that you can visit, what wildlife, birds and fauna are there and what the Conservancy is all about. SBLC does important work to permanently protect crucial wildlife habitat and corridors, valuable forestland and ecologically significant wetlands which help keep our water clean. The SBLC is located in their new headquarters at 809 E Midland Street across from Bart's Steakhouse.  Click here for more details on how you can support SBLC. Fall Recipe: This is the Easiest I have Ever Done!

Ingredients: An already baked apple pie at Tiny's Apple Store at Broadway and 22nd Streeet!

Directions: Drive to the store and buy the best Apple Pie that I have ever tasted! This pie is so good that I have it on my iPhone as a "To-Do" item. Carol said that it is the closest pie to her grandmother's that she has ever had. She has been comparing every apple pie, since I have known her (41 years!) to what her dear grandma used to make. I wish I had met Carol sooner, if her pie tasted this good! Support the Tiny Apple store and pick up any of their donuts, muffins and pies. They are that good!

Bay City in Bloom Honors Jim & Vonda Oliver

The latest Bay City in Bloom winner is very deserving of this award. Jimmy and Vonda have an impressive arrangement of landscaping and flowers surrounding their Bay City home. See the display on N McLellan Street, just north of Center Avenue.
