Audiobooks With Sonja
Both/And
by Huma Abedin, read by the author
What a way to start a new year of audio books! I went into the listening experience of this title with very high expectations and oh, how they were exceeded!

As someone who unfortunately mostly knew Huma Abedin only from the scandal surrounding her ex-husband, I appreciate this book very much. It is the story of a woman whose life is so much more than what we learned about her in the tabloids surrounding her unfortunate marriage. Her whole life story up to this point more than deserves to be read or listened to. It is the fascinating account of a woman embracing the eastern world through her faith and the western world through her work.

We meet a woman who seemingly had it all but whose career and personal life were almost destroyed by circumstances that were none of her making. Instead, however, she emerged stronger and much wiser. Huma Abedin succeeds in telling her entire story with compassionate words, including the scandal that almost broke her. Her book title Both/And is therefore very fitting for this book. It can be transferred to all aspects of her life - faith, marriage, work, and motherhood - where she met with the attitude of Either/Or.

Huma Abedin’s adult life is very much linked with that of Hilary Rodham Clinton. So, effectively, this is a two-for-one, as far as strong women are concerned. I greatly enjoyed the background information about what it takes to work in Washington for a high state official. It was extremely interesting to find out what it involves to prepare a trip for Hilary Clinton. Fun facts such as pant suits ending up inadvertently in the East River (with their wearer none the wiser!) lighten up the narrative.

Huma Abedin does a great job reading her own words. She finds the right pacing and her voice is extremely pleasant to listen to. I liked her pronunciation of Arabic words. She manages to read emotionally hard passages with a steady and strong voice and lightens up the mood with chuckles at some of the more light-hearted parts in the book.

Abedin starts this autobiography with a fascinating short account of the lives and times of her paternal and maternal grandparents. She brings her story full circle in the last chapter reflecting on how her Indian and Pakistani ancestors influenced her life.

If you are looking for a fascinating read to start off your literary New Year, I can wholeheartedly recommend this title.

TDL owns this title on audio.

Gift of Reading

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

2021 Gift of Reading Project Totals

To celebrate the holiday season, the Tecumseh District Library coordinated its traditional "Gift of Reading" project from late November through mid-December.

This endeavor provided the Tecumseh Service Club with new books for children and teens to add to the traditional Christmas baskets of food, clothing, and toys.

We received $820 and 223 new books in donations!
We so appreciate the generosity of our patrons, current and alumni Trustees & Staff members, the Tecumseh Book Friends Book Club, and other community members in providing books to children who may not have a book to call their very own!
