Advanced Techniques in Photoshop / Jane Conner-ziser

Advanced techniques aren’t difficult so much as they require more than superficial knowledge of the software, and if you’re not using it frequently, it’s easy to get into the habit of using just a few tools and techniques for every job - and forgetting that slick way of masking hair that looked so natural that you saw in a presentation or video awhile back but you didn’t use right away and now it’s …. gone :-(

Jane’s put together some of her favorite slick tricks for making jobs like replacing sky, compositing with beautiful edges, using masks and creating hand art in Photoshop to share with us, plus she’ll bring a variety of images to demo with so if you have a specific request, just let her know and she’ll do her best to include it in the evening’s presentation. Email her ahead of time, if you like!

“I might be a little bit geeky, but I’m not fascinated by the technology of Photoshop so much as I am with what I can do artistically with it. Knowing how a tool is constructed to work allows me to use it creatively. Knowing how most of them work allows me to combine them to achieve exactly what I want in the fastest and easiest way.”

Come join us for a detailed look at specific areas of Photoshop that are commonly used to create image composites and retouching objectives for the professional photography industry.

To see more of her work, please visit her website:

...From Your President
Gigi O'Dea, Memory Portraits by Gigi

Hello everyone and Happy New Year!  I hope that everyone had a great and profitable holiday season.  I know, first hand, how difficult it can be to balance  both spending time with family and the workload that comes with being a photographer during the holidays.  I'm sure that most of us are looking forward to starting the year with a clean slate.

When you think of the New Year, most of us think of New Year's resolutions.  As a business owner, this should not only apply to our personal life, but for our business life as well.  The New Year is a great time to reflect on our business as a whole and make goals to improve it.

Whether your goal is as simple as purchasing a new piece of equipment, taking a class, or as difficult as restructuring your entire business, the follow through on these goals can be challenging.  An article written in 'Forbes' gives us some tips to help with these goals.

1).  Deeply analyze your goals and the resources needed to accomplish them.
2).  Do not choose too many things to work on.  You are more likely to follow through when you have fewer focused goals.
3).  Write down your goals after deep analysis.
4).  Set action commitments after writing down your goals.
5).  Share your goals with a friend or colleague.
6).  Send weekly progress reports for accountability to a friend or colleague.

By following these steps, research as proven that you are more likely to succeed in accomplishing your goals.

As the new President of BPPA, I have been doing some reflecting on goals that I have for myself in my new role.

1).  I want to make myself fully accessible to the members and make members feel that I am approachable about anything they may need.  (You can email or call me anytime).
2).  Work on growing our membership with active and eager members.  (In the past year, we have had some great additions to our guild.  Some of these members are going in the extra mile to jump in and help out.  Their energy and enthusiasm is invigorating and well appreciated.)
3). Finally, I would like more involvement from the members of the guild with committees.  (It takes a lot of work to make a guild run smoothly and work efficiently.  If more people helped out, it would lighten the load of all the "worker bees".)

If you are interested in being on a committee, please see me and we can discuss how you can contribute and be part of our team.

I am looking forward to the new year ahead of us, and all of the learning opportunities we will get from the amazing speakers that we have.  I can't tell you how excited I am about our January speaker, Jane Conner-ziser!  We had her at one of our meetings last year, and the members couldn't stop talking about how much we wanted her back.  I enjoyed her so much, that I bid on her for a day of mentoring at the FPP convention and won a day with her!  (I am a lucky, lucky girl!)  Don't miss January's meeting on the 19th, it will be nothing short of inspiring.

See you at the meeting,

Gigi O'Dea

...From your former President
Donna Williams

It was an honor and pleasure serving you as your President.  I learned a lot of what makes this organization run.  If you want to see what I mean, take an opportunity to serve on a Committee.

I am still a Director and still part of the guild.  This guild means a lot to me, and as such, I want it to succeed.  Now as my term has come to an end, I am pleased to have the opportunity to pass the torch to our new President, Gigi O'Dea.  She will be awesome!

Thank you,

Attention professional photographers in our local area that are not members of our organization!  If you haven’t been to a BPPA meeting and want to check it out to see what we are all about, we would love to have you.  It’s a great way to learn and keep up with what’s going on in the photography world, not to mention get to know other local photographers that you can collaborate with.

Here are just some of the benefits of joining BPPA….

Membership Benefits

  1. Joining a professional organization in your chosen field indicates a true commitment to your profession. That professionalism is a great source of confidence for your clients.

  2. You are a working professional who has signed on to a code of ethics and one who is managing your business in a professional and ethical manner. You have a business license where required and, of course, you have a sales tax number. Your clients will know that you are operating your business in a professional manner!

  3. You receive opportunities for education every month of your life!

  4. You are able to use the BPPA logo in your advertising.

  5. You will get to know your fellow photographers in a social and educational setting. Networking with other professionals in your field is a huge benefit both in terms of shared knowledge and perhaps even more importantly in receiving referrals from other members. Your skills and areas of expertise will be known.

  6. You have the support of a strong organization behind you should you have any difficulties and/or questions about your business.

  7. You have opportunities for scholarship awards that may be applied to any educational program sponsored by BPPA, Florida Professional Photographers, or the Professional Photographers of America.

  8. You have access to other working professionals at monthly meetings. As you get to know them, they will be happy to assist you with questions pertaining to your profession such as dealing with a particular client, types of equipment, lighting knowledge, promotions that work, filing images, etc.

  9. Your photography will continue to improve by entering the Print of the Month Competition. What do other members think of a particular print you may have created? This Monthly Competition is here for you to find out. And, just to stretch your creativity, there is the always fun themed Creative Quarterly.

  10. Three times per year, Salon Competitions are held. As a member, you are eligible to have your work judged by outside judges under specified conditions. These competitions are incredible learning experiences and great exposures to new and marvelously creative images.
