...From The Editor

Dear Colleagues,

Happy 2017!!!

Billy Dzwonkowski and I talk quite frequently, so I came to realize.  We bounce ideas and questions and together we learn.  And recently he mentioned that he wants to make sure he gets more FPP merits.  And one of his goals for this coming year is to provide 4 separate articles that he will create with images for this newsletter.  And by doing this he is going to help me quite a bit as I then I won't have to look for good material.  He is a go getter and I am so excited that he brought this to my attention and therefore reminded me that FPP has Awards and Degrees.

Once upon a time I gave a presentation called "What's Up with the BLING?" I was fortunate that Carol Walker, Master Photog., FDPE, FSA, FED, who actually wrote this article, gave me a powerpoint presentation which made it easier for me to Show and Tell why all the FPP and Degrees work and why this matters as a professional.  Sooooo, please check out this page and read this great article which again, it was written by Carol, and let this be an inspiration to reach higher:

Billy has inspired me once again.  He was looking into how he can be better, and he found that by doing one simple thing, write an article with images for our recognized photographic publication, (our newsletter), he can earn 4 FPP merits per year. WAY TO GO BILLY!!!
Get the hints folks?

I would however like to focus on this one of many:

One Merit:
Committee worker (for Workshops, Convention or Seminar, limit 2 per convention),
Speaker at a Section meeting/Mini Seminar (limit 1 time per year at your own);
Judge at a Section meeting (limit 1 per section per year; no merits for judging at your own);
Guest Speaker at an FPP accredited photographic school, Section Officer (5 per section),
Section Outstanding Service Award,
Section Newsletter/Webmaster,
Section Delegate (must attend 1 meeting, can't combine Sections),
FPP Mentor (per student),
PPA Super Monday Instructor,
PPA Councilor attending PPA Nat'l Council Meeting,
Article published in a recognized photographic publication (minimum 500 words – limit 4 merits per year)

Two Merits:
FPP Platform Speaker (Convention or Seminar),
Committee Chairman(for Convention, Workshops, Seminar),
FOCUS Webmaster, 4th year salon committee worker,
Illustrated article published in a recognized photographic publication (minimum 500 words – limit of 4 merits a year for articles)

If anyone knows InDesign, I would love someone to help me with the newsletter and bring the online version back.  Call me if you are seriously interested, my studio 941.362.1957.

Lastly, if you know someone who is a professional photographer, or is a student of photography, or someone who is starting out in this field, please be sure to invite them to subscribe to our newsletter.  We want new members.

Thank you,

Maria Lyle, Newsletter Editor.

If you are interested, please contact our President, Gigi O'Dea.

...From Your President

Happy New Year!  I hope that everyone had a great and profitable holiday season and are getting yourselves geared up for a profitable 2017.  I always find it beneficial to start my year fresh with my business by reflecting on the past year to see what worked well, and what did not work well so that I can make adjustments.  It helps to write down goals professionally within your business if you are wanting to make changes.  It has been proven, that you are more likely to succeed with a New Year’s resolution, if you write it down and then write down the steps to how you plan to achieve this goal.  By telling another person of your plan, you can also create some accountability which could help in the success of your new goals.

As a member of the Bay Professional Photographer’s Association, you have many other professionals in which you can access to help you achieve your goals.  I find it’s always helpful to tap into others professional advise and experience to see how new ideas worked for others who may have tried that in their business’ as well.

We have lots of opportunities within our guild to grow, starting with the quality speakers that we provide every month.  I am very excited about this month’s speaker, Randy Van Duinen, who is incredibly talented and willing to share some of his talent with us.   We are also affiliates of Florida Professional Photographers who offer both a spring and summer seminar as well as state convention in the summer for us to take advantage of learning new things.  As a PPA affiliate, we encourage members to attend Imaging USA, which is going on this month.

If you are newer to the guild and would like a mentor, we have a mentor program for you as well.   We provide monthly competitions with critiques offered by experienced members.  We also have Salon competition two times a year and Creative Quarterly assignments four times a year to help you grow in  your art.

Lastly, a group of us are getting together to take the Certified Professional Photographer's exam.  Al Aldeman, who teaches the class, has agreed to come to Sarasota to teach a group of us.  The dates for this are January 23-25.  The cost is $300.  If you are interested, please let either me or Connie Summers know so we can get the details to you.

I wanted to close on a sad note.  Most of you are already aware, but we recently have lost one of our members, Gary Gillis, unexpectedly this past year.  Gary has been a member of BPPA years ago and had stepped back for a little while due to health reasons.  He rejoined our guild this past year and has been a regular at the meetings.  He was a friendly and compassionate person and sopassionate about photography.  He will be greatly missed.

I hope you all can find time in this coming year to invest into yourselves and business by continuing to be a member and participate in BPPA.  I look forward to seeing you all at our next meeting.

If you are a member, please remember to wear your badge.

Member Tribute
Gary Gillis

We are all shocked and deeply saddened by the passing of one of our own members, Gary Gillis this past month.  We will miss seeing his smiling face at our meetings each month.  I wanted to share his obituary with you in this edition.

It is with much love and a broken heart that we make known that Gary “Smokie” Gillis, age 61, departed this world to begin his heavenly journey on Thursday, December 15th. He was proud to be a long-time resident of Sarasota, Florida.

Born March 30th, 1955 in McComb, Mississippi to Sterling Lewis and Joyce Gillis, he was very proud of his family and its distinguished heritage. He was one of seven children. In 1974, he headed to Florida after the Army with nothing but a smile and heart for the tropics! He loved the beaches and outdoors and decided to make Sarasota his home. Three years later, he met and married the love of his life, Leslie Ann Waters Gillis. He built from scratch a successful land-clearing business doing work for Sarasota County, Florida Power and Light, and homeowners, too. He was very involved with his church, Northminster Presbyterian Church. Both he and his wife were youth group leaders. Smokie was a Deacon and Elder of his beloved church. He loved organizing and doing the Annual Christmas Hayride for the church complete with cookout, caroling at the nursing home, and back for s’mores. Later in life, he also pursued his passion for photography, completing the Education Degree in Professional Photography earning the status of Certified Professional Photographer. He was also a member of the Bay Professionals Photographer Association. He ran the two businesses simultaneously and eventually focused on photography alone. Being the perfectionist he was, he opened his own studio to print his own photos. His work was beautiful. He also trained with the Humane Society with HIS two golden retrievers to do Pet Therapy taking them to hospitals, nursing homes and also the “Reading with Children” program at local libraries, which he loved. Smokie volunteered with Meals on Wheels, which everyone thought was a perfect fit, for someone who loved interacting with people—as we all know he had the “gift for gab”. He was a loving husband and will be greatly missed.

He is predeceased by his father, Sterling Lewis Gillis, his brothers, Sterling Robert Gillis and Leon Edward Gillis.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Leslie Ann Gillis, his mother, Joyce Gillis of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, a sister Gail Thompson of Biloxi, Mississippi, three brothers, Kirk (Liesa) Gillis of Greensburg, Louisiana, Errol Lee (Teri) Gillis of Many, Louisiana, and Kris Gillis of Laurel, Mississippi, and many nieces and one nephew and his beloved brother-in-law, Gregory V. Waters.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Northminster Presbyterian Church, 3131 61st Street, Sarasota, FL 34243, or Humane Society Sarasota County (Pet Therapy) 2331 15th Street, Sarasota, FL 34237.

We have great news for you!

Al Audleman will be here in Sarasota at the end of January so that we can become certified. The test can be taken online or taken at a convention or FPP school.
The course will be $300.00 per person and that will include the book which would cost $100.00 alone.
Florida School cost is $599.00, plus hotel over $100.00 a night, food etc.
Convention (Imaging USA) PPA is $199.00 plus flight, food and hotel.

$300.00 per person, this is a great deal and should be attended by anyone looking to improve their business.

Are you ready for your next professional move as a professional photographer?
Here is a little something about Certified Professional Photographer, CPP.

What's CPP?

The Certified Professional Photographer (CPP) program from PPA assures others of a photographer's knowledge, experience and continuance to develop new skills and techniques. It is a declaration of your professional competence! Being a CPP is like quality assurance because certification is a credential consumers and businesses understand. More importantly, it provides you with a tool for telling the world—and all those potential clients—why they should call you rather than a competitor down the street.

  • There is a CPP Standard. What is it?
Established in 1977 by Professional Photographers of America the Certified Professional Photographer (CPP) credential serves to identify professional photographers who have demonstrated technical competence through a written examination and photographic image submission. PPA and the Certification Committee follow standards for certification which are established by the national Institute of Credentialing Excellence (ICE). ICE sets the guidelines for creating the written certification exam, and makes sure the questions are relevant to professional photography today. ICE also provides PPA and the Certification Committee with support and information to maintain the certification process.

  • What's a Certification?
The certification of specialized skill-sets affirms a knowledge and experience base for practitioners in a particular field, their employers, and the public at large. Certification represents a declaration of a particular individual's professional competence. In some professions certification is a requirement for employment or practice. Doctors, mechanics, accountants, professional secretaries, surveyors and many others are all required to go through a certification process of some kind.

  • What Motivated Photographers to Get Their CPP?
"Certification counts in ways you never thought! Two years ago I was in a nasty auto accident and couldn't shoot for three months — it's in litigation — my lawyer just called and wanted to know 'are you a certified professional photographer?' I kid you not! Because they have to prove I'm not just a MWAC—belonging to PPA and being certified is critical in proving my professional status! Who knew?"                                                                                         — Francie Balthazar Stonestreet, CPP
  • Why Hire a Certified Professional Photographer (CPP)?
Because when things matter, you've only got one shot. And there's no substitute for experience.
