Courtside, The Torch’s annual basketball preview magazine, is finally here! Though not our typical print edition, we hope you enjoy all the stories we have curated for this edition. Learn about how the Men’s Basketball program lost nearly its entire roster last season, but Head Coach Mike Anderson recruited six talented transfers to fill the void. Stef Smith, Joel Soriano, Montez Mathis and Tareq Coburn came to Queens, filling out the rotation behind All-Big East talents Posh Alexander and Julian Champagnie. They've added both shooters and big men to improve depth, and Anderson will incorporate them into his up-tempo system. Leilani Correa and a veteran roster aim to elevate the Women's Basketball program to a better season with a new mindset. In his tenth season leading the Johnnies, Head Coach Joe Tartamella is ready to play physical basketball in the Big East. Let's preview all of the new changes to the program in this edition of Courtside!

State of the Big East:
Who Should the Johnnies Look Out For?

The Big East has more parity than in recent memory – at least in the conference’s two halves. Any of the top five teams could win either the regular season or postseason titles, and any of the remaining six teams could finish in positions six through 11 in the standings. One thing is for sure: St. John’s success against these 11 teams will determine whether the Red Storm make it back to the NCAA Tournament in the 2021-22 season. Click here to learn more.

After flirting with the NBA Draft process last spring, the Big East’s leading scorer is back in Queens for his junior campaign. Read more about what Julian Champagnie learned and how he’s going to turn the experience into wins, here!
The most feared player in the Big East wasn’t afraid of playing with a broken thumb, and he’s certainly not afraid of his expectations for this season. Read more about Posh Alexander, the Big East Freshman and Defensive Player of The Year here!

Transfer Alert!

Six Incoming Transfers Change Trajectory of Men’s Basketball

Die-hard fans of the Red Storm are finally returning to Carnesecca Arena this week to watch the Men’s Basketball Team, and they may be in for a shock – especially if they were well-versed with last year’s roster. The bench dons an entirely different set of faces than previous years, as over half the team has joined the Red Storm through the transfer portal. Read more about these new players here.
Players from across the world have been recruited by Head Coach Joe Tartamella. From Israel to Michigan, a diverse set of players have been selected for St. John’s. However, for some, there is no place like home. As he turned to the transfer portal for this upcoming season, Tartamella found two New Yorkers wanting to return home for their final collegiate years – graduate student Danielle Patterson and senior Danielle Consgrove. Under Head Coach Mike Anderson’s leadership and the culture he’s brought to Queens, “New York’s Team” is ready to take on the Big East. Anderson has built a new roster this year, with nine new scholarship players and just three scholarship players returning. His accountability in the program stimulates their desire for success both in the short term and the long term. “We expect a lot out of ourselves,” Anderson said. “You can see we’re excited about this basketball team, becoming the best version of ourselves.” Read more here.
