Meet Jeremiah and Maricela

Three-year-old Jeremiah and his mother Maricela live in Elgin with his younger brother Nicholas. Jeremiah and Maricela have been in ChildServ’s 0-3 early childhood learning program since October 2016 when Maricela enrolled her son because he was behind in his language development.

When he entered the program, Jeremiah was barely able to speak. Veronica, his ChildServ Parent Educator, immediately referred him to Child and Family Connections, an early intervention program in Kane County, and during their in-home visits, worked with Maricela and Jeremiah on activities, such as mimicking animal sounds and blowing bubbles, to jumpstart his speech, and shape sorting and color matching to improve his problem-solving skills.

Veronica and Maricela also discussed the importance of reading to Jeremiah to aid his language development, building his critical thinking skills and vocabulary. As of Veronica’s most recent visit, Jeremiah is now able to say words like “bye” and “water”, and Maricela reports that she reads to him daily and invested in a shape sorting game so that Jeremiah can practice every day.

“With Veronica and ChildServ’s help, my son can talk, and is working toward being ready to start school,” said Maricela.
