Meet our Graduates: Alyssa and her mother, Natalie

This past Friday, one of our proud PEP graduates from Elgin surprised ChildServ Parent Educator, Sarita, with flowers following a year-end field trip to Randall Oaks Zoo in West Dundee.

They wanted to thank Sarita for helping Alyssa to be on-track to begin preschool in the fall.

Natalie and her daughter Alyssa enrolled in ChildServ’s 0-3 early learning program in January 2014 after hearing about it from a friend. Natalie had immigrated to Elgin from Mexico and was drawn to the program because she had studied to become a teacher in Mexico. Natalie knew that starting to educate children at an early age helps them to succeed.

When they entered the program, Natalie needed help to find a safer apartment in which to raise Alyssa. Their first Parent Educator arrived with housing help and diapers to support Natalie as a new mother and books so that she could read to Alyssa.

Together, she and Natalie worked with the early education curriculum to ensure Alyssa reached important developmental milestones like walking and talking. Natalie also noticed during this time that Alyssa loved trying to read so her educator brought more and more books for her.

In October 2016, Sarita became Natalie and Alyssa’s educator. Since then, they have worked hard to make sure Alyssa’s ready for school, doing activities to improve motor, social and emotional skills. Alyssa’s favorite activity involves matching colors on a coffee can: While Natalie cuts paper into shapes, Alyssa colors them the same colors as those on the can. Together, they place a magnet on the back of the paper, and Alyssa matches the colors by sticking the magnets to the can.

In the fall, Natalie and Alyssa will transition to a program offered by U-46, Elgin’s school district, and Natalie feels that ChildServ’s program and educators have prepared Alyssa to do well in school.

“I would like to thank Sarita and my other workers for their help,” said Natalie. “It has been a great program, and it has done a lot for my family.”
