Garden Chills and Thrills

The chill in the air, a looming first frost, changing leaves on the trees and apple picking all add up to only one thing: October is here. And October means two things to the team at Green City Growers. 1) Cold frames 2) Halloween! We plan to get a little Michael Jackson's Thriller this year in the R&D garden, and invite everyone to check it out at our neighbor's (Taza Chocolate) annual Day of the Dead Block Party, Saturday, November 1st.

Meanwhile, Erik and Zack from our Builds crew are busy building cold frames for all the pre-orders. Haven't ordered yours yet? Don't hesitate! Jack Frost is just around the corner, ready to scare your plants to DEATH. Order the special Season Extension package of one 4 x 8 raised bed with 2 cold frames by Oct. 31st, and receive a 5% Discount. Contact Sarah to reserve your place in the queue: 617-776-1400.

Happy Halloween. - GCG Team

We received an email of distress this week about a garden pest with accompanying photos of said pest.

Q: I was helping a friend with her garden today and we noticed these bugs. We also noticed some holes in her kale and Brussels sprouts. Any thoughts on what they are and what to do?

Adrienne, our Director of Education, provides the answer.

A: You've got caterpillars! You can apply BT, Jack's Dead Bug, or alcohol/soap spray to the plants (spray mix guide); or remove the caterpillars and affected leaves by hand. Got a question? Let us know!

Moving Indoors!

b.good locations throughout Greater Boston have been adding indoor growing systems all season long in anticipation of the long winter months without an edible plant in sight. And customers are noticing.

b.good Founder/Owner Jon Olinto says "our Boylston location's indoor garden has generated more attention and buzz than any sign or anything else we've done to connect people with what we do and our mission.

Their seasonal local apple and bacon kale & quinoa bowl speaks to b.good's commitment to serve customers what's local and in season whenever possible, while proving it's possible all year long.

Gardening w/Kids

We've heard that "kids who grow kale, eat kale." Offering healthy options in the school lunch program is nice, but isn't enough when 1) kids can't identify vegetables, and 2) the competition is pizza. Scary! We've made it our mission to teach as many Greater Boston kids as possible how to grow their own food... So they eat more vegetables, and like it.

We reach over 1,000 kids annually via milk crate garden workshops at Whole Foods (pictured: Andover), garden education at elementary, middle and high schools, YMCA gardens and summer camp gardens. Find out how we help parents and teachers fund garden education at new schools each year!

Food Day 2014

Food Day Somerville is a 3 day affair this year, kicking off Oct 23rd at the Thursday Mobile Market @North Street Housing and ending with a Block Party Oct 25th at the Saturday Mobile Market @Mystic Housing Development. FREE, open to all, with live music, kid's activities, and more! Join GCG for a special garden & chef activity.

Hyper-local & Hot

Pumpkin spice lattes may be all the rage this time of year, but we're packing a different kind of heat: habanero hot sauce (recipe)! Aiee! We used peppers grown in our R&D garden right here at the office for the perfect reminder of sunnier days in the dead of winter. Crack a jar, open a bag of tortilla chips, and throw on your favorite sombrero. Fiesta!

The Urban Bounty

Our authoritative "how to" guide for growing edibles in urban Greater Boston is now available at Whole Foods Market in Lynnfield! Already available online and at bookstores in Somerville and Cambridge, it only made sense to stock it where our farmers maintain the rooftop farm at Whole Foods.
