B'More: A Call to Action

As part of the B'More Intersession Series, first-year students explored Baltimore City through the lens of sustainability and environmental justice. From seminars to projects, to field trips and volunteer outings, these twenty-one students are equipped for a life of civic action in Baltimore.
LEED Platinum
The Undergraduate Teaching Laboratories, a state-of-the-art lab space on the JHU Homewood campus, is now LEED platinum certified - the highest possible rating from the US Green Building Council. This visionary building truly marrying form and function in its cutting-edge technology uses about half the energy of similar lab buildings on campus. Congratulations!
In the News
Did you know that Rachel Carson, "Mother of the Environmental Movement," is a JHU alumna? Her book Silent Spring sparked dramatic change in government policy for pesticides as well as a movement that still lives on today. PBS's history series American Experience debuted a new film last week diving into Carson's private life and groundbreaking work.
Eco-Smart Tip
It may have been Baltimore's warmest January since 2006, but when the show and ice does come, prepare to deal with it the Eco-Smart way. Grist published a helpful run-down of all the products out there. The most important tip though: generally, think traction, not melt. Everyday products like sand, sawdust, non-clumping kitty litter, and ashes can make slippery surfaces walkable without toxins.
