Autumn 2016 Lightner Methodâ„¢ articles and offerings.

I was recently reworking some of my past articles: The  Exploratorium - Tips for Making Like Easier series. This inspired me to write a new article, with help from Gracie, called Thriving/Surviving working at a Desk. Below is a short version. I recommend the full version for clarity and detail.

In October on-line Lightner Movementâ„¢ and LearningMethodsâ„¢ classes begin.
In the on-line Lightner Movement classâ„¢ you are able to work with the material at your own pace and in the privacy of you own home, yet still be part of a group.

A LearningMethodsâ„¢ group gives you an opportunity to explore a process on how to investigate and unravel the common misconceptions that interfere with life, performance, and learning. You learn a set of tools useful for educators, coaches and for your own personal freedom.

I am on the road this autumn. Check out how you can participate in up-coming workshops.

Please help yourself to resources available on my new web site: Lightner Methods.com and Resources.

Happy Autumn!!
Sitting on an air cushion is so good you'll want to lick your lips.
It can be good to stand and move!

Gracie's Exploratorium

Thriving/Surviving working at a desk.

How can you work at a desk and stay lively and comfortable? Here are few tips to think about in your workplace.

The Adjustable Work Area
Change your orientation: Sit, Perch and Stand

Make Adjustments as you change your orientation:
  • Line of Sight
  • Orientation of your hand
  • Freedom of movement/support
  • Set-up situations that force movement • GET UP OFTEN!
There is no perfect or right ergonomic set-up. Change things up. Move.

Your Body:
When sitting, perching or standing be able to tell when you are balanced and freely mobile at your joints. Here are some principles to know about your body so that you have the information to allow yourself to adjust with ease:

1. Center of Support • Even Distribution of Contact
  • Explore Balance
2. Moving at Joints or 3 Useful Physical Landmarks:
  • Where is my bottom? or know your hip-joints/sit-bones.
  • Where is my head? or know your Atlanto-occipital joint.
  • Length and depth of my torso.
There is no perfect posture for sitting; there is no one right way to be in your body so you won’t hurt.

Listen to your sensations, move, change, follow your body.
You may find yourself crossed legged on the chair one moment, then perched on a stool, then hunched over your work….allow change – no right or wrong.

Your Mind, Well-Being or State of Being
The primary determining factor for your comfort at a desk job is your moment by moment state-of-being. You can have the most ergonomic work area and knowledge of your physical structure but, if you are strained, rushed, or frustrated then the physical structure will reflect this state-of-being.

Do you ever experience:
  • Too much to do in the time you have.
  • Co-workers not doing work the way you hope – frustration.
  • Communication snarls – frustration to anger to depression.
  • Not understanding, trying to problem solve, learning – can lead to narrowed attention and efforting.
Here are a few ideas of ways to use your state-of-being to make productive and enjoyable change.
  1. Recognize that your state-of-being gives you useful information.
  2. Take a moment to feel the sensations of your feeling.
  3. Ask why this state makes sense?
  4. Ask a clarifying question.
  5. Experiment with different strategies and notice the effect of each on your state-of-being.
(LearningMethodsâ„¢ gives you tools to precisely get at the sources of your state-of-being-to clearly do the process above)

As you explore the relationship between your state-of-being and what you are doing or paying attention to, you become more facile making useful choices and getting out of ruts of thinking/feeling.

Enjoy Exploring!
