Resources. The National Association of School Psychologists, National Center School Mental Health, CASEL, and Center to Improve Social and Emotional Learning and School Safety provide curated lists of resources to help educators support the well-being and learning of students, families, and communities during the COVID-19 epidemic.

Online Connections. An Anaheim Union High School District (CA) teacher shares how online teaching has created opportunities to connect with students and the school community.

Staying Connected. A teacher at Broadway Elementary in Venice (CA)  shares strategies for staying connected with her students and supporting their social-emotional learning from afar.

 
 Mental Health

School Climate and Health Factors. CalSCHLS has released a factsheet examining the relationship between health-related behaviors, school climate, and school safety on student reports of sadness and suicidal thoughts.

Telehealth. School districts are increasingly turning to telehealth to meet students’ mental health needs during the pandemic.

Virtual Services. A school counselor at Triton Regional High School (MA) shares how she remotely supports students transitioning back to school after a mental health-related absence.

 Social-Emotional Learning

Universal Screening Guidelines. Project Cal-Well from the California Department of Education has released a brief on Universal Social, Emotional, and Behavioral Screening that includes considerations for implementation and resources.

Mindfulness. CalSCHLS has released a What Works Brief on Mindfulness-Based Practices for Schools that provides a range of approaches, from those that can be easily implemented by educators right now to school-wide.

Video. The Center to Improve Social and Emotional Learning and School Safety (SEL Center) has released a video to help education leaders communicate how social-emotional learning, trauma-informed practices, restorative practices, and similar approaches can fit together as part of one aligned, coherent system for creating safe and supportive learning environments.

Self-Awareness and Mindfulness. The SEL Center has developed a brief titled Mindfulness in Education: An Approach to Cultivating Self-Awareness That Can Bolster Kids’ Learning.

Literature Resource. The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative and Imaginable Futures has developed a library of approximately 1,000 learning experiences focused on civics, social justice, social-emotional learning, and global competence.

Special Report. Education Week released a special report with an entire issue of articles that explore a range of SEL topics.

The School Climate Connection Newsletter is provided monthly by WestEd under contract from the California Department of Education (CDE). Its purpose is to disseminate current information on school climate practices, policies, and resources to empower schools on improving school safety, conditions for learning, and pupil engagement and well-being.
