 Climate and Culture

Supportive Schools Certification. Chicago Public Schools (CPS) continuous improvement process recognizes schools for their school climate and social-emotional learning efforts and impact. In five years, CPS has certified 520 schools.

Closing the Achievement Gap. Edison Elementary (CA) makes sure students feel supported while setting high expectations.

 COVID-19

Resources. The National Center School Mental Health, CASEL, and Child Trends have compiled tips and resources to help schools support their students, families, and communities in response to COVID-19. 
 
National Guidance for Schools and Daycare Programs. The CDC provides guidance for schools before and during a COVID-19 outbreak.
 
Teacher Wellness. Teachers from across the world share strategies to stay grounded as they teach from home.
 
State Policies and Guidance. Child Trends and EMT Associates, Inc. have developed a resource that includes the text of state laws, guidance, and resources for how school districts in each state should respond to a disease outbreak.
 
Preventing COVID-19-Related Bullying. Amid ongoing concerns over the spread of the coronavirus, the U.S. Department of Education has urged schools to address bullying and other unfair treatment of students who are perceived to be Chinese-American or otherwise of Asian descent.
 
Protecting Civil Rights of Students.  THE U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights has released a fact sheet titled Addressing the Risk of COVID-19 in Schools While Protecting the Civil Rights of Students and a Supplemental Fact Sheet Addressing the Risk of COVID-19 in PreschoolElementary and Secondary Schools While Serving Children with Disabilities.

 Cultural Competence

Indigenous Children and Youth. The National Association of School Psychologists has released a statement on effective service delivery for Indigenous children and youth.

 Discipline

Reducing Suspensions and Expulsions. The National Institute of Justice reports on effective school-based programs for reducing school exclusion.

Report. The Institute of Education Science examines the use of expulsion in U.S. public elementary and secondary schools based on schools reporting being allowed to use this disciplinary practice and minority enrollment.

 Diversity

Equity Initiatives. Montgomery County Public Schools (MD) implements equity initiatives to strengthen inclusion and diversity.
 
Discussing Equity Issues. Californians Dedicated to Education Foundation has released a short video, “This is Equity,” to help local educators, families, students, and community groups engage in conversations on equity issues.
 
Workforce Issues. The National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine reports on the implications of the changing landscape of K-12 education for pre-service and in-service education with a focus on diversity.

 Expanded Learning

Social-Emotional Learning. Participation in an afterschool social-emotional learning program for at least two years has been found to increase children’s academic skills and positive classroom behaviors.

 Health

Parental Outreach. The CDC’s Parents for Healthy Schools includes informational and planning tools to encourage parent engagement in school health.
 
Sleep and Discrimination-related Stress.  A study of ethnic/racial minority students investigates their stress and wellbeing in response to discrimination and the beneficial role of sleep.
 
Vaping. To combat youth vaping, the city of Salem (MA) is buying back vape pens and e-cigarettes from teenagers.
 
 Mental Health

Anxiety. A Chicago Public Schools teacher shares strategies to help students manage their anxiety.
 
Exercise. The New York Times reviews research that linked light physical activity among adolescents to better mental health. 
 
Subgroup Disparities. Two studies published in Pediatrics explore mental health disparities and suicidal ideation and behavior among sexual minority youth.  Suicidal ideation and behavior among sexual minority and heterosexual youth: 1995-2017Sexual orientation and suicide attempt disparities among US adolescents: 2009-2017.

Student and Educator Supports. Hamilton Township School District (NJ) aims to ensure educators and students have access to mental health supports.
 
Student Mental Health.  An analysis of gubernatorial speeches (with interactive maps) reveals student mental health was one of the six top topic areas.
 
Mindfulness. National Public Radio talks with educators and researchers about mindfulness-based practices to support students coping with stressors and anxiety.

  Parent Engagement

Parent Partnerships. Educators at Laurene Edmondson Elementary School (CO) aim to create true learning partnerships with parents.

Report. A Center for American Progress analysis illustrates the importance of communicating different types of information to parents through a variety of communication systems.

  Relationship Building

Classroom Management. Edutopia discusses strategies for building meaningful relationships with students, even difficult ones. 

 Safety

Active Shooter Drills. The National Education Association, the American Federation of Teachers, and Everytown for Gun Safety has released recommendations to protect student wellbeing.
 
Reducing Hate Crimes.  Massachusetts’ Governor’s Task Force on Hate Crimes provides a range of recommendations for reducing hate crimes and prejudice overall.

Reunification Drills. A school safety coordinator discusses his top five preparation takeaways after his district completed several reunification drills.

New National Resource. The federal government has launched SchoolSafetly.gov to share actionable recommendations to keep school communities safe.

Report. RTI International investigates schools’ use of tip lines to report potential safety threats.
 
State School Safety Laws. This report explores the history of state school safety laws and implications for preventing and responding to future school shootings.

Counseling. California school districts are realizing the benefits of investing in school counselors, including student wellbeing and school climate.
 
Education for Homeless Children. The National Center for Homeless Education examines trends in the education of students experiencing homelessness.
 
Homelessness. Teachers are identifying and addressing the needs of increasing numbers of homeless students
 
 Trauma-Informed Care and Resiliency

Best Practices. This article discusses the potential impact of community violence on students in D.C. and identifies four key strategies to mitigate the impact of trauma.



Immigrant Children. A report on the State of Immigrants in Los Angeles County informs educators and policymakers about the challenges impacting student learning.

Special Education. The Policy Analysis for California Education (PACE) has released a full set of publications describing key stakeholders’ input and vision for serving all California students, including those with disabilities.

Guidance for California Schools. California Department of Education along with the California Health and Human Service and the California Department of Public Health agencies have released COVID-19 guidance for K-12 schools.

The School Climate Connection Newsletter is provided monthly by WestEd under contract from the California Department of Education (CDE).
