Strategy 2: Your Focus, Fighting the Real Enemy

Before we dive into this month's study, I want to be sure you've taken the time to write out your prayer for increased passion. Use the cards found in the back of your book, and then keep them in your prayer journal. Pray this prayer everyday. This isn't just an exercise; it's the start of taking your prayer life back with a passion.
_____________

I'm excited about what God is going to speak to us in this month's chapter on Focus. After reading the first strategy on passion, I've felt it difficult to focus when I pray. At first, I felt guilty because I couldn't keep my mind from wandering when I would try to pray, especially with our growing list of prayer requests. (Please be sure to keep checking the Prayer List file on our Facebook page.) Can you relate to my struggle?

Do you have a difficult time staying focused when you pray?
Does it seem too hard to fight it?
Do you end up quitting rather than pushing through?

I have answered "yes" to all of the above. And now I know why!

We have an enemy who has a strategy in place to get us to focus on anything or anyone rather than him and his tactics against us.

If he can't keep us from focusing at all (like my struggle), then you can be sure he will work on getting us to focus on the wrong things.

"If I were your enemy, I'd disguise myself and manipulate your perspectives so that you'd focus on the wrong culprit--your husband, your friend, your hurt, your finances, anything or anyone except me. Because when you zero in on the most convenient, obvious places to strike back against your problems, you get the impression you're fighting for something. Even though all you're really doing is just...fighting. For nothing." (page 39)

"Fervent prayer relies on focus," Mrs. Shirer emphasizes.

My prayers have been somewhat regular in February, but I can't say they've been fervent. Maybe you have experienced a similar struggle. Well guess what? This is good news! It means we're on the right track.

God wants to help us fight the enemy with the weapons that are powerful and can pull down strongholds. And it starts with knowing His word and using it as we pray.

"For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places." Ephesians 6:12

Webster's 1828 Dictionary defines FOCUS in this way:
Latin  focus a fire, the hearth.
A central point; point of concentration.

I love that focus is defined as a fire or hearth. When you walk into someone's home on a cold, stormy night and they have a warm fire in the fireplace, you're immediately drawn there. It soothes, comforts and warms your cold hands and tired feet.

Focus on prayer in this way and it will change your desire. Instead of it being like an appointment in a cold and sterile doctor's office, focused prayer is like a cozy fireside chat with the only one who can do anything with our requests. He is waiting for us to be drawn in to this scene. He has things on His heart He wants us to know about and to pray about according to His will. This isn't just us coming to Him, but it's His commitment to meet with us when we come. It's personal--not sterile.

Then, when we come and sit we can begin to focus on what is on His heart. This is where our prayers go from a duty to a delight, as John Piper often says.

Father,

Thank you for helping us to focus this month. I pray that things that have never made sense to us, will become crystal clear as we lay them before Your Throne of Grace. Give us eyes to see and ears to hear what You are saying to us through this study. Protect us from the strategies of the enemy so that we can be used by You to pray effective prayers for those in this group and for our family and friends. We don't want to waste our time on this earth being sidetracked by the schemes of the devil. Give us a clear focus we ask in Jesus' powerful name,
Amen
