WIYN’s NEID Begins its Mission of Exoplanet Discovery

A new tool for the discovery of planets beyond the Solar System, NEID has begun its science mission at the WIYN 3.5m Telescope at KPNO. NEID will also acquire extensive spectra of the Sun that will be made public immediately.

SOAR Calibration Wavefront Sensor Upgrade

The recent upgrade to the SOAR telescope Calibration Wavefront Sensor system has extended the lifetime of this critical component. New CCD cameras, optics, and an updated version of the software control system were installed.

Press Release — Giant Comet in the Outer Solar System

Discovered in data from the Dark Energy Survey taken with the Blanco 4m Telescope at CTIO, Comet Bernardinelli-Bernstein is estimated to be 100-200 km across and about 1000 times the mass of a typical comet, making it arguably the largest comet discovered in modern times. On its highly elongated orbit, it journeys from the distant Oort Cloud over millions of years and will make its closest approach to the Sun in 2031.
