Social Justice Day
The "Best Class of 2018" met for their Social Justice Session Day on Wednesday, November 1st. The day began at the Salvation Army of Elyria, where the class partook in the Poverty Simulation. The simulation gives the class a glance into the lives of those living at or below the poverty level. Alumni and Board Member volunteers helped to staff the resources that are represented for the class to visit during the course of their one "month" simulation. .

Lunch was held at the new Leadership Lorain County location, where the Class, along with Alumni and Board Members, met with Virginia Beckman, Executive Director of Genesis House, as she spoke about Social Justice, Leadership, and their corelation to each other and the community.

From the LLC office the class split into groups to tour four different organizations that serve the county in different ways. Gathering Hope House, Rape Crisis, NAMI, and Big Brothers Big Sisters, all opened their doors to allow the class to tour, ask questions, and get a better understanding of what they offer to those they serve. After touring, the class met back at the LLC office to discuss what they experience during their tours.

A very eye opening experience for many, the day finished up with discussion of their homework, which was to volunteer in the community, or take part in the SNAP Challenge.
The class will meet again on Wednesday, December 6th, for their Education Session Day.

Class Project Proposals

The Class of 2018 will be the 33rd class to graduate from Leadership’s Signature Program.  Like their predecessors, they wish to make a difference and leave their handprint on Lorain County.  We seek your input for projects worthy of pursuit to present to the class during their Mid-Year Retreat.

LLC is looking for projects that can be completed in a timely manner (January to May), support a need or want from within the community, cannot be exclusively fundraising in nature - however the class is welcome to collaborate with other groups to help offset the final cost of a project for the selected agency, and a representative of the selected agency must commit to be on-site and available while work is being completed.

If you know of an agency with a need the “Best Class of 2018” can help meet please contact or 440-281-8556 for more information.

All proposals will be vetted by Leadership staff.  Proposals will be submitted to the Class of 2018 for their selection on January 10.  All agencies submitting proposals will be notified of the outcome.Visit for the Project Proposal form, located on the Signature Class page.
Deadline for proposals is Wednesday, December 20, 2017.

Where are they now?
Joan Samkow is a Leadership Lorain County class of 1995 graduate. She commented, "Not only was the LLC program educational, but created lasting friendships and professional connections that have endured for a lifetime."

Since leaving the Lorain County Board of Mental Health 3 years ago, Joan has been doing marketing, communications and graphic design consulting work. This has given her the freedom to pursue her passion for photography.

Joan continues to be actively involved in Lorain County as a consultant and volunteer. She has remained a firm supporter of LLC and encourages others to become involved with this outstanding organization.  She recently entered the Medina County Art League’s Aquarius show and won first place. She was competing with over 100 other artists.
