Class of 2020's Social Justice Session Day
The "Best Class of 2020" met on Wednesday, November 6th, for their Social Justice Session day, Sponsored by the Elyria YWCA.
The class began the day at the Elyria Salvation Army, which served as the backdrop for their Poverty Simulation. For this powerful activity the class spent a simulated month in "families" of varying levels of difficutly, attempting to meet bill deadlines, travel throughout the "town" and keep their heads above water. Many from the class expressed amazement at how quickly their family situation changed and how helpless they felt when things changed.
The Elyria YWCA served as the home base for the second part of the day as the class enjoyed lunch and their Champions of Leadership presenter Victor Leandry, Executive Director of El Centro de Servicios Socials, Inc. Victor spoke passionately about the work surround Social Justice in our community and his efforts to aid those in need.
After the conclusion of Victor's presentation the class split into groups to visit different agencies within the community. After visiting The Rape Crisis Center, Elyria YWCA, Save our Children, Neighborhood Alliance, NAMI, and Beyond the Walls Church the class came back to discuss their visits, what they learned, and how they were impacted by that knowledge.
Often referred to as the heaviest and most impact full day of the year, the class closed out their session with some session day planning, homework review and plans for their next meeting in December.
