Is It Worth It ?
Whilst at my daughters school re-union a lady came to me and said I used to be in your Guide Company. I must say sadly I did not recognise her although I should have done as her parents used to own the pub near where we lived. However I guess by the dates she attended the school she must be about thirty eight.

She continued to say “I still remember the excitement and the opportunities you gave me especially when we camped at the Outdoor Pursuits Centre in Harlow. Climbing the wall, abseiling and canoeing. I only had the opportunity to try all those activities because I was a Girl Guide in Harlow.” The last thing she said was “I often think of that time and how lucky I was.”  I couldn’t wait to get home to look through my photo albums and there is Charlotte proudly outside her tent and in a canoe. The date was September 1985.

So Leaders you do a fantastic job in giving girls all the opportunities available and it is those things that many of them will never forget. ---------So is it worth it ?   YES.   You do a great job and are really appreciated.

Avril Brampton
County President.

A message from our Archivist

If anyone has any old or discontinued badges lurking in the backs of drawers or cupboards that they no longer want and they would be willing to donate, especially the recently discontinued Guide Interest badges as there are hardly any of those, could you please let me know.
If you are local to me I would be happy to collect, or you could drop them off to me in Upminster
Many thanks

International Opportunities Weekend 4th-5th October.

Open to girls who will be 14 by the 1st of July 2015.
Opportunity for 4 girls to be sent to Region for consideration for Region trips in 2015, (not WSJ)

Details HERE

INTOPS will take place on 26 to 28 September at Youlbury Activity Centre, Oxfordshire. Unfortunately Girlguiding still haven’t filled the event to capacity, so really need your help to push the opportunity to young people in your Counties. They would really like to get some strong candidates for GOLD signing up, so if you can think of anyone who would be interested in GOLD, a great ambassador for Girlguiding and passionate about international development/Guiding then please do encourage them to apply.

There is also the Girlguiding GOLD bursary for participants to apply to, which can cover the participation fee for those who have financial barriers. A travel grant is also available to those travelling over 60 miles.

Anything you can do to publicise INTOPS would be much appreciated! The info sheet, application form and reference form are attached.

International Community Experience Weekends 2015
International Community Experience (ICE) Part One is a wonderful opportunity for Guides aged 11-13. The event aims to encourage girls to think about their community and international issues, with an option to take part in ICE Part Two if they wish to take part in a trip abroad. Guides should attend one of three ICE weekends at different venues around the Region, where they will learn more about the project and also undertake a local service challenge. Once Part One, the International Community Experience Weekend, has been completed the Guide will be invited to participate in Part Two, participating in a trip abroad, and will need a passport.

ICE Part One and ICE Part Two cover all the guiding programme zones - Skills & Relationships, Celebrating Diversity, Healthy Lifestyles, Global Awareness and Discovery, and girls may attend without their Leaders.

The Weekends are being held at:
·         Skreens Park, Chelmsford, 1 - 3 May 2015
·         Quarries, Cosgrove, Milton Keynes, 5 - 7 June 2015
·         Iceni House, Eaton Vale Activity Centre, Norwich, 17 - 19 July 2015

IMPORTANT: Correction to the new recruitment process communication -
message from Girlguiding

In the Autumn edition of guiding Magazine, you will read that the new recruitment process is for ‘any new volunteers (ages 14+)’. Please accept our apologies as this is incorrect.

The new recruitment process is for any new volunteer (aged 18+). Young Volunteers aged 14-17 are not required to complete the Girlguiding Recruitment process until they become 18.

Please remind local volunteers that Young Volunteers (aged 14 – 17) should not be left unsupervised during guiding activities, this is also the case for Adult Volunteers (aged 18+) who have not completed the Girlguiding Recruitment check process.

Once again we apologise for this incorrect information being sent to you. Corrected information will be included in the September section E-Newsletters, Commissioners’ mailing and Winter edition of guiding magazine.

Do you want to be part of the largest joint Guide and Scout event to be held in Essex in 2016?

Essex International Jamboree is taking place from 30th July to 6th August 2016 and are actively recruiting staff volunteers.
As a member of staff you can offer skills and experience to enhance the event or even challenge yourself to do something you have never done before.
Girlguiding leaders just like you, can offer so much to the event and get rewarded with a week to remember. Jamboree Chief Karen Packer has been a leader in Girlguiding since 1994 and encourages anyone curious about getting involved to get in contact "I have met and worked with people from all walks of life who volunteer at the Jamboree for an exciting week creating a memorable event for the young people. Working in a team of over 1500 volunteers to make a small town in a field for a week is a unique opportunity. Don't wait to hear about it from others, be a part of it yourself!"
Essex International Jamboree offers adults the opportunity to lead a team of volunteers from across the UK and beyond to deliver services and activities to nearly 6,000 young people. Rainbow and Brownie leaders often dismiss this event as not for them as it is an event for Guides, but as a leader you already have skills which we can use from activity leaders to members of the communications team.
Just visit
www.eij.org.uk to find out more and challenge yourself.
DB Promotions would like to offer you great value tickets to see Disney on Ice. Click HERE for more info
Did you know that Kingswood have a brilliant Bushcraft programme across our centres?

Bushcraft is a new and exciting activity that teaches young people the wide range of bushcraft skills necessary to survive in a wilderness scenario. Young people are encouraged to think about their perception of the natural world, as well as understand which elements can be utilised in conjunction with newly acquired skills; such as learning to construct a shelter, safely lighting a campfire using natural materials, and using campfire gadgets to cook a variety of meals outdoors. By working together in teams, Bushcraft also teaches important life skills such as resilience, communication, problem solving, creativity and overcoming personal challenges.

Join us at one of our centres from £64 plus VAT (£76.80) for a fully inclusive 2 night weekend including indoor accommodation, all bedding, all food, and a jam packed weekend of activity. If you fancy mixing adventure activities with bushcraft we are also able to do this so please just ask.

For more information please give us a call on 0800 288 9990 or send us an email back, or check out our other offers on the website

It would be much appreciated if District Commissioners and Level Contacts could pass on the information in this newsletter to anyone in their District that does not have access to e-mail. Section Leaders are asked to cascade to Young Leaders and D of E / V-Volunteers. There are still some people not receiving their copy of the newsletter as their email address on Go! is incorrect. Please check and make sure that your details are up to date. If you do not wish to receive future copies of the E-Bulletin, please use the facility at the end of this issue to unsubscribe.
