Bible Reading for 10/11/13
In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat— for he grants sleep to those he loves.
"Sleeping on the job." Didn't that used to be a criticism and just cause for "letting someone go?" Not anymore. Check out this story about companies building "nap rooms" so that their employees can catch forty winks and improve their productivity. And it makes sense, doesn't it? Ours has become a sleepless society. We forsake sleep to chase every dollar, experience or opportunity - and then toss and turn when we do put our head on the pillow because we can't turn off worry about tomorrow or minds that race.
Enter - a God who says "be still." A God who says remember the first story I ever told you - about creating the world in six days, and resting on the seventh. Not because I needed a rest, but because I new you'd need a reminder how best to order your life. Never more than six days - without setting aside a day to appreciate the fact that I'm in charge and have complete control over all the important stuff. This is the God who invited dads with children dying from snake venom to stand still and just look at something lifted up on a piece of wood. Powerless, all they could do was rest in the comfort of his promise that there was deliverance and hope, not in the brass serpent, but in the God who would lift up his Son to show the world how much he loved them.
King David, the same David who describes his tossing and turning in Psalm 6:22, wrote in Psalm 23, "you make me lie down in green pastures ..." What a contrast! And what a picture of the contrast in our own lives. When's the last time you tossed and turned? Odds are, its the last time a busy world distracted you from the truth that you have a shepherd who never sleeps, but speaks to your heart the sweet assurances of sins forgiven, shame washed away, and a Creator who knows and loves you! In a world that spends billions of dollars on "sleep aids," the answer is simply a God who paid one price, for all, to grant the rest.
Spend time today with that God. Be still and know his presence and promises. Look into the eyes of a world looking for rest, know the answer to their search - and pray the Spirit give you courage and words to tell them.
Now I lay me down to sleep. I pray the Lord my soul to keep. Guard me, Jesus, through the night. And wake me with the morning light. Amen.
