New Year Message from Martin Quantock
President, Cheltenham Chamber of Commerce

At long last, there is an air of optimism regarding the economy.  Employment figures are positive, order books are beginning to fill up and there is generally a feel good factor spreading throughout the private sector. I do hope that 2014 turns out to be a successful year for your business.

Obviously there are some businesses that are experiencing difficulties and the Chamber is here to support you in any way we can.  This includes activities such as networking events, lobbying local and central government on your behalf, and training seminars on a wide range of subjects in the purpose built Business Centre at 2 Trafalgar Street.

It is vital that your local Chamber reflects your views, concerns and ideas to people and organisations that may be of assistance.  I would ask that you send in any news items for our widely distributed newsletter, and/or contact us at the Chamber at info@cheltenhamchamber.org.uk so that we can see how we may be able to help.

The purpose of the Chamber is to serve you, its membership, so communication is vital.

A letter has recently been sent to the membership containing your  invoice for 2014, and I’m sure you will be pleased to see that we have held our rates at current levels for next year.  You can pay your membership by cheque or BACS – whichever is more convenient for you.

On behalf of the Executive Committee, may I take this opportunity to thank you for your support during the course of last year, and I do hope we can continue to be of service to you for the forthcoming year.

My very best wishes to you for 2014.

Yours sincerely

Martin Quantock
President

Proposed Withdrawal of Emergency Surgery at Cheltenham General Hospital?
Emergency Surgery could be removed from Cheltenham General Hospital according to a leaked report. The Trust have tried to dismiss it as an internal discussion document but they have not denied the existence of the report. Following on from the downgrading of the A&E Department at Cheltenham General Hospital in July of 2013 this would be a further major blow to the standing of the hospital and could effectively turn it into a minor Injuries Unit.

“The Cheltenham Chamber of Commerce and REACH are deeply concerned about the proposal for the possible withdrawal of emergency surgery at Cheltenham General Hospital” commented Michael Ratcliffe, Chair of REACH and Chief Executive of Cheltenham Chamber of Commerce, “This would be more than unfortunate for Cheltenham and would turn Cheltenham General Hospital into a hospital where major surgery is no longer performed.”
