ATD Conference – I am Talent

A highlight was speaking at and participating in the Association for Talent Development (ATD) Conference in Orlando, Florida. Imagine over 10000 enthusiastic learners, 400 speakers (20 simultaneous sessions) and 400 exhibitors, over 4 days – the opportunities for personal insights, fast-tracked experience, new tools and techniques and networking are just phenomenal. (See my blog: International ATD Talent Best Practice - 6Rs). I spoke on the “Transforming culture through personal and career empowerment”, using our experience and post-learning surveys from our I am Talent workshops. (See my blog: From Passive Entitlement to Active Accountability for career development). Our books, I am Talent and Accelerated Learning were on sale, both sold well and I had the privilege of sharing book signing sessions with some of the greats such as Ken Blanchard, David Rock, Pat McLagan.

New Tools – UMU, SimTalent, Udemy and Energos

We brought back two really great learning tools from ATD. One is a mobile engagement and feedback tool, called UMU for “in the moment” sharing of ideas, voting, commenting and rating, emoting and gaming – with just a click of your cell phone. The second is a Talent Simulation Board Game to bring the key aspects of talent management to life in a fun and interactive way. We have also created an on-line video and activity based learning experience for our book “I am Talent” through Lastly, we have partnered with Energos to bring cutting edge data analytics for leadership and culture transformation initiatives. The interactive, continuous, coaching style feedback process has a proven track record locally and internationally in shifting behaviour which in turn can be directly correlated to individual and business unit performance. Build your own leadership capability index and grow your organisation’s leadership capability in the process. (See more on these awesome tools below by clicking here)

Accelerated Learning Books and Workshops

Kerryn and I have been living our passion and vision of building capacity in the next generation of learning practitioners through our book and workshops “Accelerated Learning”. We have had an enthusiastic response from the academic community, the public and corporates with many requests to facilitate our Accelerated Learning experiences (The Conference Hub, Knowledge Resources, Gibs, UJ, USB-Ed, etc.). See more at This included an in-depth pre-conference workshop on Creating a Learning Culture at the Knowledge Resources L&D conference. As a judge of the KR judging panel for the best L&D team award. I felt so proud of the bold visions, amazing team effort and creativity that each of the entrants demonstrated – giving me renewed hope for the development of skills, talent and mind-sets in the great country of ours.

TurnKey projects

keeping us out of mischief are two transformational projects where we have partnered with our clients to ensure long-term sustainable change and capacity building. One of these is an integrated Human Capital Transformation project where we are working with the HC and business leadership teams to align strategic goals and structures, build a high performance, high engagement culture, build capacity in HC and leaders for managing change, engaging people and growing talent.
Our other client partnership is working together with leaders and Human Capital teams to instil a Talent Development ethos and system that ensures a suitable talent pipeline of leaders and technical specialists for the future. This project spans multiple divisions, businesses and brands and has the potential to impact the lives of many thousands of employees.

Welcome to New Associates - Good-Bye to the Old

To help us make a significant impact and difference in these environments we have brought on a number of associates to be part of the Catalyst team. Welcome to Selma, Stan, Jen, Tracy & Wendy. We also welcome Steve who has joined our support team as our Social Media & Digital Specialist. To see more on our team and associates please click here.
It is with mixed feelings that we say goodbye to Andrew Harding, who has been part of Catalyst for the last 7 years, as a senior associate, partner and Operations Manager.  I know I will feel the loss most intensely as he has been my rock, my support and my sounding board across many projects and in managing the business.
We are also very excited for him as he is following his passion and returning to production where he has spent most of his career prior to joining Catalyst. He now has an opportunity to pull all of his previous World Class Manufacturing experience together with his people and change focused consulting experience, and make those changes from within. We wish him all the best in his new adventures.

Other exciting projects

In between the big stuff we love to add value in different environments and teams. We have facilitated two EQ in action workshops for Gibs Women in Leadership Program. We have run an HR strategy and team building for On the Dot in Cape Town. We have presented at a number of conferences this year including the UNISA Talent Conference on Talent Retention (click here), the Conference Hub Talent Conference on Integrated Talent Management (Click here), the SAGEA conference on strategic graduate recruitment on Transforming Culture through personal and career empowerment (click here), the L&D COP conference on Gamification – practical examples (click here) and the Knowledge Resources Manager’s conference on Crucial Conversations (click here). We are also building our expertise in Workforce Planning and have a white paper and toolkit to guide the process (click here
Giving Back

We had an opportunity to work with Bryandale Primary School Leadership Team who have had a number of changes and were looking for ways to gain alignment towards a new vision for the school.  We shared our High Performance Teams workshop the Realise2 Strengths profile with them as tools for continued development. We look forward to a continued journey of learning from each other. Andrew and I have also just returned from facilitating an Alive Retreat in the beautiful Drakensberg Mountains. During 2.5 days, we create experiences for participants to examine the aspects of self that hold them back (disempower) or propel them forward (empower) and explore techniques for transforming old beliefs or habits into new empowering mind-sets and behaviours. It is a time for reflection, recharging, letting go and renewal. Great to see so much energy and vitality released when we remind ourselves of the power of choice to respond to our circumstances and that we really have all we need within.

I am Talent goes digital on

We have now run many successful workshops based on our book, I am Talent (guide to personal and career empowerment). To make this unique offering available to more people at a significantly lower cost, we have gone on-line and international through Now you can download video based sessions of John and Debbie sharing their talent and career wisdom, supported by activities, tools and resources. We are privileged to have had over 1200 students in a short span of just two weeks. We look forward to many more students sharing in the wonderful experience

We have also recently partnered with Energos to bring cutting edge data analytics for leadership and culture transformation initiatives with a proven track record in incremental and sustainable shifts in behaviour which can be directly correlated to individual and business unit performance through the data. Build your own leadership capability index and grow your organisation’s leadership capability in the process. for more information click here.
Umu by Steve Chirwa

Umu is a mobile engagement and feedback tool, for “in the moment” sharing of ideas, voting, commenting and rating, emoting and gaming and can accommodate limitless participants. When facilitated by an Umu facilitator, results and feedback are instant. Umu has a simple to use interface, requiring only a smart phone, Wi-Fi/3G and 4 digit pin to join a session.
Umu features a variety of surveys, discussion options, games and Q&A. Add pic.
So far, umu has added a dynamic feature to our workshops and conferences in both Catalyst and client environments. Highlights have been capturing the leadership interest in talent management across 150 of the top executives of a large SA employer, engaging on change readiness and feedback on accelerated learning experiences. Contact us if you would like to know more or rent out our tool for your workshop or function.
SIMTalent by Steve Chirwa

SimTalent is a Talent Simulation Board Game that brings the key aspects of talent management to life in a fun and interactive way. SimTalent allows participants to compete in teams to make talent assessment and development choices to optimise talent ROI over several business periods. Mimicking real life tasks the participants are able to evaluate each team member based on his / her pre-defined personality / task profile, promote selected team members to new positions & responsibilities and also develop a solid succession plan for the team members and the team leader as well. The simulation not only brings Talent Management to life, but cements the business rationale for investing in talent development and succession planning. Instead of boring powerpoint slides and templates, SimTalent makes learning fun and makes it stick.

We are the proud to be the only SA licensees. For more info regarding SimTalent options for shifting to a talent culture or learning about Talent Management processes and tools contact
Building a pipeline of future talent - Workforce planning in action by Jean Kilner

There is a compelling case for Strategic Workforce Planning, more so now, than ever before. Many sectors experience critical shortages of essential talent,
while others struggle to define the shape of the workforce they need in the midst of major and rapid change.
Organisations are experiencing huge waves of change that crash over them continually, creating a VUCA world that is characterized by volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity. To read more click here.
