Weekly Field Notes

Farm Talk Notes from your farmer

Lately we have been working hard turning crops in the field and planting seedlings in the greenhouse. This last weeks weather was terrific for a little extra growth and building excitement for a new season. I always look forward to the flavor of the next season. speaking of which, this picture of ugly food makes me so happy, and I am sure you can all relate to receiving some unusually shaped carrots or peppers in your share! There is a great article in National Geo this month about food waste. It amazes me how much food goes to waste off market farms and stores. We have decided not to return to market this year for the first time in 6 years (little nervous). Trying to find creative ways of dealing with the food waste was among the concerns that led us to this decision. With CSA we harvest what we need, same as wholesale, there is very little waste. At market, if you don't sell it, its very hard to wholesale or confidently store for the next week, after it has set on a table for 6 hours. We would donate, or sell the food that was kept cool, or we feed ourselves. Minor stress, but heavy concern after you worked so hard to see it through to harvest. Even still we have to deal with field waste, which is not much and usually due to crop failure. If you all ever have a hard time consuming the food we harvest for you, let us know! It is always a struggle with the CSA program, adjusting the desired amount vs the usable amount. We love feedback!
