City of Falls Church Celebrates Tree USA Honor, Arbor Day on April 22

This is the City's 39th consecutive Tree USA Award

Tuesday, April 4, 2017 --The City of Falls Church has been named a Tree City USA community by the Arbor Day Foundation for the 39th year in a row. The City will celebrate the honor at the 126th anniversary of Arbor Day on Saturday, April 22, with a morning ceremony at 11:30 A.M. followed by an afternoon neighborhood tree planting from 12:30 P.M. to 4:30 P.M.

The Arbor Day ceremony will be held on the back lawn of The Scout House (128 S Spring St.). Jim McGlone, from the Virginia Department of Forestry, will be presenting the city with its 39th consecutive Tree City USA award for 2016. The Neighborhood Tree Program's spring planting will immediately follow the ceremony.

The community is invited to attend both events with the City and the Village Preservation and Improvement Society (VPIS). Volunteers interested in planting trees should wear sturdy shoes, bring gloves and shovels (if possible), and RSVP to Seth Heminway at or (703) 389-7360.

This year marks the 125th anniversary of Virginia's first Arbor Day in 1892, which was held in Falls Church at Frady Park. The 2017 tree of the year, selected by the City of Falls Church Tree Commission, is the flowering dogwood - Virginia's state flower and state tree.

About Tree City USA and the Arbor Day Foundation
To become a Tree City USA community, the City of Falls Church fulfills the four standards required:
  1. Tree Board or Department - The City of Falls Church's five-member Tree Commission makes recommendations on relevant legislation, plans, policies, and programs. It also advises the City Arborist, City Council, and City Manager on tree-related matters.
  2. Tree Care Ordinance - The City has two ordinances that pertain to the preservation and replacement of trees on private and public grounds.
  3. Comprehensive Community Forestry Program - The City's Urban Forestry Division ensures the City has a viable tree canopy.
  4. Arbor Day Observance - Falls Church has celebrated Arbor Day every year since 1892, usually with a ceremony and tree planting.
The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.
