City of Falls Church Celebrates Tree USA Honor, Arbor Day on April 21
This is the City's 40th consecutive Tree USA Award
Wednesday, April 4, 2018 --The City of Falls Church has been named a Tree City USA community by the Arbor Day Foundation for the 40th year in a row. The City will celebrate the honor on Saturday, April 21, with an Arbor Day ceremony at 1:00 P.M. near the Gage House in Cherry Hill Park (312 Park Ave.) followed by an afternoon neighborhood tree planting from 1:30 P.M. to 5:00 P.M.
The community is invited to attend both events with the City and the Village Preservation and Improvement Society (VPIS). Volunteers interested in planting trees should wear sturdy shoes, bring gloves and shovels (if possible), and RSVP to Kate Reich, City Arborist, at email@example.com or 703-248-5183.
This year marks the 126th anniversary of Virginia's first Arbor Day in 1892, which was held in Falls Church at the old Jefferson School (now Frady Park). Since 1974, The City has held an official celebration of Arbor Day during the month of April. The City Council will proclaim Saturday, April 21 as Arbor Day in the City of Falls Church at their upcoming Regular Meeting on April 9. The 2018 tree of the year, selected by the City of Falls Church Tree Commission, is the Pignut Hickory.
About Tree City USA and the Arbor Day Foundation
To become a Tree City USA community, the City of Falls Church fulfills the four standards required:
Tree Board or Department - The City of Falls Church's five-member Tree Commission makes recommendations on relevant legislation, plans, policies, and programs. It also advises the City Arborist, City Council, and City Manager on tree-related matters.
Tree Care Ordinance - The City has two ordinances that pertain to the preservation and replacement of trees on private and public grounds.
Comprehensive Community Forestry Program - The City's Urban Forestry Division ensures the City has a viable tree canopy.
Arbor Day Observance - Falls Church has celebrated Arbor Day every year since 1892, usually with a ceremony and tree planting.
The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.
