Wednesday, December 18, 2019 -- Preparations for adding the property at 604 S. Oak Street (also known as the Fellows Property) to the City's Master Park Plan will soon move forward, as the City of Falls Church hires a contractor to demolish the house and garage on the land. The dwelling is not on the official registry of historical homes in the City, and staff worked with both local and regional organizations to determine ways to deconstruct or salvage any items of value. Current plans are for the nearly two-acres of land to become part of a new Master Park Planning process, with potential uses that could include open space, park use, school use, community gardens, and more. The public will be invited to be involved in the Park Master Planning process when they begin in the spring of 2020.
Adding park-designated spaces to the City are part of both the City's Comprehensive Plan and Vision Statement: "Parks, open space, and recreational facilities are critical components of a community’s quality of life and the health of its citizens. Parks provide social, environmental, and economic benefits." The Vision is to "Build upon existing parks within the City to develop a well-maintained, safe, and connected park, open space, and recreation system that provides a range of amenities, enhances natural ecosystems through the use of green infrastructure, and contributes to a sense of place by enhancing and relating to adjacent land uses."
