Times of Uncertainty Continue

The past few months have been filled with uncertainty and concern on how we can keep our families safe during this pandemic. We continue to follow all the guidelines set by CDC, local government and the State of Texas.

Discerning best practices for catechetical instruction for your parish could be a very difficult task but we are ready to help.  We certainty know that planning a traditional, in-person catechetical program would be very difficult; we need to think outside the box.  We are finalizing a set of recommendations that could be implemented at parishes for this next catechetical year.  During the month of July, we plan to contact every one of our DRE’s or Parish Catechetical Leaders to assist in planning a program that can fit the reality of your parish community.

This month’s newsletter will feature information that can be of help to your formation programs. The new Directory of Catechesis is being translated and will be published very soon in English.  While we wait for its release, Our Sunday Visitor is offering an online webinar.  Please take advantage of this opportunity to learn about what to expect in this new directory. We continue to include resources from the USCCB on racism and links to different opportunities for continuous formation.  Please join us for the Building Intercultural Competency for Ministry course in July.

This month, all DRE’s and Youth Ministers are invited to participate in an Ethics and Integrity in Ministry Zoom meeting. This meeting will address new policies regarding the use of digital media. Most of our publishers will be offering webinars on how to present their online resources and digital media for Catechesis.  Please take part in as many of these webinars as possible, as they will introduce not only their content but also creative platforms for online instruction.

The Office of Evangelization & Catechesis and the Office of Youth, Young Adults & Campus Ministry will continue to find and develop additional resources to help in the upcoming catechetical year.  Contact any member of our offices if you have any questions or need any assistance.

Directory for Catechesis

After much anticipation, a brand new Directory for Catechesis for the universal Church was released by the Vatican on Wednesday, June 25th.

The Directory for Catechesis contains the official directives from the Church for those who hand on the faith to others.
Our Sunday Visitor will be hosting a webinar and provide you with a guided tour of the new document so you can become more familiar with its structure and content. OSV will highlight, in plain English, the main points and new content in this directory and discuss the potential practical applications for our work as catechists, catechetical leaders, and religious educators.

Join OSV as they dive into a new moment in catechesis!

"A CULTURE OF ENCOUNTER IN A DIGITAL SPACE"

In 1983 Pope St John Paul II called for a new evangelization, one “new in ardor, methods, and expression toengage the present-day culture and modern man”. If we have not yet taken that call to heart, the pandemic gives us a wonderful opportunity to do so. Some years later, Pope Benedict XVI in his call to re-propose the Gospel, reminded us that the New Evangelization “is first and foremost a personal profound experience of God”. Our goal to connect others to Jesus Christ has not changed but we have new tools to serve the mission of the Church.  Archbishop Jose Gomez (Archdiocese of Los Angeles) offers this reflection:

Our Holy Father Pope Francis has been calling us to find new ways to evangelize using these new media. In using such channels we make connections with people, build friendships and community, address peoples’ spiritual needs, and nourish their faith. We are living in the first generation where the Internet, computers, mobile phones and social networking are a “given” part of ordinary daily reality, so the Church needs to have a strong presence in this digital culture. Our task is to find ways to create what Pope Francis calls “a culture of encounter” in this digital space.

During the month of July we will continue to provide resources, opportunities for interaction with our publishers, and reach out to DREs in one on one conversations to assist parishes in creating a space for encounter and formation within our new reality.

See You on Zoom!

First of all I would like to say that I sure do miss visiting with all of you in person! We are now in July and normally so many of you are visiting the Pastoral Center to take classes for certification or use the classes as refreshers.  I am grateful, though, that we have the opportunity to see you during all our online meetings.

July will be another busy month utilizing Zoom! We continue with our online classes but in addition to that our wonderful publishers are offering webinars to help you plan for the fall and present their resources. Next week, we are blessed to have Loyola Press, RCL Benziger and Sadlier offering webinars for our diocese. Luisa Negret with Pflaum Publishing will also be offering trainings on RCIA Adapted for Children & Teens in both English and Spanish on July 27 and 30.

As we continue to calendar webinars, please feel free to participate in those that fit your schedule. If you have any questions, please reach out to us as we are here to assist you.
