Commemorating Black August!

Black August remembers and honors Black freedom fighters and particularly those struggles that took place during the month of August.  It honors the history of Black resistance in the U.S. and diaspora. Black August is a month dedicated to commemorating and paying homage to fallen Black revolutionaries, incarcerated freedom fighters and Black resistance, historical and ongoing. It is a time of reverence to honor political prisoners and martyrs of the Black liberation struggle. Within Black August there is a tradition of fasting from sunup to sun-down, and studying and educating to help instill self-discipline.

Help Support Bro. Sundiata Acoli

This 85-year old elder has no 401K plan, no savings plan, and no pension. He was one of the oldest people incarcerated in this country. Please donate to assist his family provide the necessary care for him.

Free Dr. Mutulu Shakur

Mobilize to insure the freedom for Dr. Mutulu Shakur this Black August! Mutulu Shakur, stepfather of Tupac Shakur, has been imprisoned for the past 33 years. He is 71 years old, suffers from bone cancer and has been given mere months to live. Despite this, the Bureau of Prisons has refused to release him on parole, being denied 9 times. His campaign has appealed to the Department of Justice, the U.S. Parole Board and the U.S. Pardon Attorney for his release on either parole, compassionate release, or clemency.

Help lift up these calls for his immediate release, as well as his name and legacy. Stand with the #FreeMutuluNow Campaign and visit for updates.
July 29, 2022 - Nkechi Taifa is interviewed on All Politics R Local with hosts Zayid Muhammad, Jonathan Alston and Ed Riley, discussing the case of Dr. Mutulu Shakur, his current health condition, and demands that he be released to live out his remaining days in the comfort of family and friends.

Exonerate the Honorable
Marcus Mosiah Garvey

The Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey was born on August 17th and his legacy is celebrated worldwide during the year, and particularly in Black August. Echo the many calls for exoneration from his unjust incarceration at the hands of the U.S. government. There is currently a petition for a posthumous pardon pending. Let not another Black August pass without his exoneration.
On February 6th, 2022 virtual town hall was held, which included presentations from Dr. Julius Garvey, son of the Hon. Marcus Garvey, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Greg Carr, Nkechi Taifa, Justin Hansford, and several other leaders to inform and encourage everyone to sign the petition to secure a presidential pardon, to exonerate Marcus Garvey. #ExonerateGarvey
