Applying the Science of Child Development in Child Welfare Systems

The Case for Science-Based Innovation in Early Childhood

How can we use insights from cutting-edge science to improve the well-being and long-term life prospects of the most vulnerable children in our society? Child welfare systems encounter hundreds of thousands of these children, and their families, every year. In a new report, the Center shows how the science of child development can be applied to child welfare policy and practice to improve how these systems support the children, families, and communities they serve.

How the Center Approaches Innovation

Our Innovation Approach
How can we build better programs that achieve greater outcomes for more young children and their families? Traditionally, the early childhood field has focused on proving that programs for children facing adversity are effective on average—rather than understanding how they work and for whom. In the Center's Frontiers of Innovation (FOI) community, our process for developing, testing, and iterating programs allows us to go beyond the average to ask: What about it works? How does it work? For whom does it work (and not work)? In what contexts does it work?

Note: Due to an overwhelming response, the November 2nd Science-Based Innovation training was quickly filled to capacity. However, we are in the process of identifying a date and location for a second training in Spring 2017. Stay tuned for updates!

New Translations

The Brain Architecture Game: Now in Spanish and Portuguese

The Intergenerational Mobility Project
The Center is excited to announce that the Do It Yourself (DIY) version of the Brain Architecture Game is now available in Spanish and Portuguese. This board game engages policymakers, community and business leaders, health and education service providers, and government officials in understanding the science of early brain development—what promotes it, what derails it, and what the consequences for society can be.

Opportunity for Practitioners

If you work with parents or other adult caregivers, the Center needs your insight! Be part of a panel that tests new tools and publications for practitioners on serve-and-return interactions, adult capabilities, and more. You must be willing to provide feedback via online surveys and, in some cases, focus groups, phone interviews, and/or video conference calls.
