The Aram

with Tahmina Begum
Welcome to the first supplement of my newsletter, The Aram, with me, Tahmina Begum, a writer, editor and chatty patty for free.

Inspired by the ongoing conversations I have with others and myself, The Aram has been purposely created for joyful reading. In a climate where everything can feel rushed and reactionary, this email is supposed to make your mind feel both lighter and w i d e r.
In Bangla, my mother tongue, the word 'aram' means ease.
Pronounced 'ar-ahm',  the synonyms for aram are 'shuki' and 'khushi' which means happiness and joy. It's no wonder Bangla was voted the sweetest language in the world.

So what will this newsletter include? It will be filled with book recommendations, interesting corners of the internet, tips from #freelancelyf and of course, centre women of colour and Muslim women. It feels rather special that this is launching on International Women's Day too. I also don’t want to keep you for too long as I believe having time to wind back into yourself is so key, regardless of what your time may be comprised of. I'll try to keep these newsletters short and sweet.
I’m so excited to do what women do best: impart knowledge, so hopefully, this will fulfil your appetite inshallah. Here are a few things to get you started below.

With aram,

What You Should Check Out For #IWD

This article by Leandra Medine for Man Repeller about her path to writing.

A podcast that brought me to tears. Journalist Nelufar Hedayat records her first conversation with her mother about how they became refugees and what we forget to remember when it comes to seeking asylum.

Books such as Suhaiymah Manzoor Khan's poetry collection Post Colonial Banter. Priya Basil's Be My Guest, a title that stirs ideas of community, food and generosity together. Hafsa Lodi's exploration of what modesty looks like for Muslim women in 2020 in Modesty: A Fashion Paradox. It even made my top debut of books by Muslim women to read this year.
