Eye See…Eye Learn Program

Did you know that 25% of school-age children have a vision problem? Yet only 10% of kids under age 4 have had an eye examination. The Ontario Association of Optometrists, with funding from the Ministry of Health, is offering a very cool, very FREE childhood eye health and vision awareness program. The program offers free eye exams (covered by OHIP) and, if needed, FREE eyeglasses to students in Junior Kindergarten.

Is there too much fundraising for schools?

A B.C. group calling itself the "concerned citizens of Strathcona" (a Vancouver nieghbourhood) has written an open letter outlining concerns about schools' increased reliance on fundraising.

In the letter, they say, "our schools are public schools, and that means they are supposed to be, just like the army, the police force and garbage collection, funded by the government, not by cupcake sales or book fairs organized by its school communities."

In Ontario, there are provincial guidelines for fundraising, but many schools rely on parent fundraising for what some would consider core materials.
