Updated health & sex education curriculum to be implemented

According to an Environics poll conducted last year for Ophea, the vast majority (93%) of Ontario parents want an updated sexual health component of the Health and Physical Education curriculum.

This fall, after extensive consultation and based on input from a range of experts, the new curriculum will finally be implemented.

Minister of Education looking for 60 student advisors

Grade 7 - 12 students wanted for provincial advisory council

Do you know a student in grade 7 to 12 who wants Ontario's schools to work better for all students? If you do, let them know about the Minister's Student Advisory Council (MSAC).

This is not your usual group of "A" students. The Minister is looking for students who have experienced both success and struggle in school; students who know how important it is that all students feel a sense of belonging; and for students who want to ensure that schools are open to students' participation in decision-making.

The deadline for applications is February 28 at midnight.

School closing discussions raise new issues

Province slow to implement new community hub policies

Soon the province will introduce a new framework to make the process for closing schools more "efficient." While many schools will, and perhaps should close, in some cases, new policy to support schools as community hubs may make a difference.

This fall, in mandate letters to Ontario's Ministers of Education, Health, and Municipal Affairs, the Premier asked them to work together to find ways to improve their land-use planning practices and to develop policy to support schools as community hubs.

There are many "community school" or "community hub" models across the country. The most effective ones have integrated services for children and young people and their families.

Online Budget Consultation

The Ontario government has introduced a new online budget consultation tool. You can now provide input on the provincial budget and engage in discussions with other interested citizens.

You can submit your ideas anonymously by email or share them on the site so that others can comment. You can also vote on various proposals.

Participate in Consultations.
