A Passion for Reclamation
By Steve Zimmerman
This past weekend my wife and I had the honor to host a stop on the local holiday tour of
historic homes. Over the past four years we have been building on the previous owner's
rehabilitation of this old 1898 house to make it a more fit and enjoyable place for us. To say the
least, this has been the most interesting home we have ever inhabited!
During the first few months we lived here, both of us were wondering if we truly made a huge
mistake! What were we thinking of, buying a house twice the size of the one we lived in in North
Carolina? Does this old house ever get warm in the winter? What was the poor guy thinking of
when he built that thing there? Will there ever be a remedy for the leaks in the roof? Needless
to say we felt like the Pilgrims arriving in the New World at the worst possible time of the year!
But as we got more accustomed to the house and all its quirks, it became a labor of love to
find ways to continue to restore this house to its intended grand purpose. Sure it still has
some issues – what home doesn’t. Yet we wouldn’t trade this experience for anything now.
This reclamation comes with a cost of money, time and labor. Which got me thinking during this holiday season how God has always been in the process of reclaiming us for his own.
Mankind has been abused by sin and has lost the grandeur of what we were intended to
become. God tried previous workers like prophets and priest in the Old Testament to try to bring us
back to him. But because of Christmas, He now has come to completely restore what we lost in
our rebellion to him. It cost him his only Son in this work so that we can be put back together.
All of his efforts were done out of love for us. He even promised that he would be with us –
Emmanuel! What a great spiritual contractor for our temple as we get reclaimed!
I hope you will join me in these holy days and offer a prayer of thanks for what our Heavenly Father
did by sending Christ to us. If you are like me, I wouldn’t trade my relationship with Him now
for anything in this world!
