In Flanders Fields Volume 85 -
On the Wings of Wind
Jongen:
Rhapsody Op. 70 flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, french horn & piano / Lied / Méditation, Op. 21 / Préambule / Danses / Danse Lente Op. 56b / Concerto, Op. 124
5 Beaufort Brussels Woodwind Quintet,
Hans Ryckelynck

PH92085 | 5412327920858

In spite of Joseph Jongen’s admiration for Debussy and Ravel— their rich tone colors and ‘daring’ harmonies strongly appealed to him—his musical style rather continued that of the school of César Franck. He deliberately preferred to further explore the well trodden paths.
All his compositions are suffused with warm, glowing intensity, alternately enthusiastic and meditative, reflective and exuberant, playful and tender, but always fascinating. Jongen is and remains a dyed-in-the-wool late romanticist, honest, open and passionate. However, his rich and subtle orchestral colors betray both the influence of impressionism and the organist’s craft.

"Prégardien duo tackle the unfamiliar and take on the add sacred cow." Steve Moffatt, p.81
“a real treasure...What makes this anthology so enriching is the skill of their arrangements...The two tenors of father and son - shared DNA, complementary tints and timbres - blend with grace and glee. The Zilcher duets for two voices and two harmonicas have to be heard to be believed.” BBC Music Magazine-Awards Issue 2015*****
“Both tenors display family traits of appealing mellifluousness and impeccable musicality. Together they communicate a sense of something homely, of improvisation and of singing for pure enjoyment...Gees, himself responsible for some of the arrangements, contributes excellent accompaniment throughout.” Gramophone Magazine

Eddie McGuire: Entangled Fortunes
Elegy / Euphoria / String Trio / Entangled Fortunes / Quintet 2
Red Note Ensemble

DCD34157 | 0801918341571

Gramophone describes this disc as, 'a wonderful collection of chamber music ... Red Note's performances are as vital and coherent as the music itself.' The Guardian writes, 'Red Note is the ideal ensemble to champion McGuire's folk-rich music: the players shift between silvery laments, robust dances and angular squalls in a blink' and McGuire is heralded as 'a composer of immense sincerity, supreme craftsmanship and creative integrity' by The Scotsman.
Refreshingly and compellingly, the Scottish composer’s music disdains allegiance or aversion to any -ism.”
McGuire is one of Scotland’s greatest living composers. A renaissance man, his compositional voice is informed by a broad wealth of cultural experience and by an unlimited melodic creativity. In this intensely beautiful and unpretentious music, folk-like tunes appear naturally, taking their place in a world of invention large enough to contain minimalist gestures, intense romanticism, meditative silence and sudden drama. In the second of two discs programmed to initiate their new recording partnership with Delphian, Red Note Ensemble bring passion and care to this music – a token of the regard in which McGuire is held by Scottish musicians of all generations."

“The middle movement [of the Elgar String Quartet] is the revelation, shimmering with a new hushed beauty - equally a testament to the lustre frequently achieved by the 16 musicians in Ben Palmer's Orchestra of St. Pauls.” BBC Music Magazine June 2015

"Laura Buruiana and Alexandra Silocea are both Romanian so it is natural for them to begin their recital with a work from that country... On its own terms this programme succeeds and I should certainly like to hear these musicians tackle the two Enescu cello sonatas." Read more from Stephen Barber

“This performance matches the youthful enthusiasm of the [Enescu], with Silocea presenting her elaborate part in the grand manner, yet never swamping the cello…Silocea and Buruiana are entirely persuasive.” Gramophone Magazine

Gramophone Awards 2014 - Winner Chamber

'The crazed tarantella that closes the quartet is a tour de force, raw, visceral and with an emotional immediacy that is almost unbearable. Such is the intensity of the playing that by the end of the disc you, too, are quite exhausted...This is good. Very good' Read the review
More accolades:
“This album is scalding to the touch. [the Haas's accounts] are irresistible not only for immaculate surfaces, but for effortless engagement of that grief-stricken quality beneath Schubert’s shows of gaiety and even his most serene assurances.”
“If CDs had grooves I would already have worn out these marvellous recordings...The young Czechs have the perfect fusion of virtuosity and profundity.”
The Pavel Haas Quartet, with the superb extra cellist Danjulo Ishizaka, even succeed where most other ensembles fail, making the last movement of the String Quintet into something that seems a fitting conclusion to a work whose first three movements are unquestionably supreme...essential listening for anyone who loves Schubert.”

"In a booklet note full of autobiographical detail, the composer concludes by saying that “this recording is in many ways a mark of my friends’ and family’s achievement, as much as it is mine.” He is unduly modest here. It was a real pleasure to make acquaintance with his music again and I would earnestly recommend listeners to hear music which is so immediately communicative as well as displaying the development of Whitlock’s style. Flowing waters and Evening prayer, if they are indicative of the manner in which his writing is moving, make one eager to hear more."  Read more of Paul Corfield Godfrey

"One of the many pluses when it comes to reviewing for MusicWeb International is the opportunity to hear things you'd would otherwise be unlikely to come across. Add to this that you get the opportunity to post your review of something which would in general be ignored elsewhere.
This Gramola disc is a glowing case in point and I seriously wonder if it will be reviewed elsewhere."

A French Celebration with Susan Graham
11 - 22 July 2015
"Who knows whether it was strategic or just serendipitous that the Australian Chamber Orchestra would get together with a leading interpreter of French music, American mezzo soprano Susan Graham, on the same day that Parisians stormed the Bastille nearly two centuries ago. Either way, A French Celebration the revolution was more about art than politics."

"Masterful Schubert song-cycles bring audience to their feet" Clive Paget Editor 'Limelight'

A SCHUBERT JOURNEY ★★★★

"These masterful nights would have come as no surprise to many music-lovers; both participants have collaborated in highly praised CDs of all three Schubert song-cycles and what we heard in the Murdoch Hall, if packed with the energy that live performances bring, offered few surprises in terms of interpretation."
