Hello Eagle Scouts,
Why is the rank of Eagle Scout so important to our young Scouts and their families? I recently asked myself this question as I saw our Troop enjoy two months in a row of three Eagle Scout candidates passing their Eagle Scout Boards of Review. Though the rank of Eagle Scout does not replace school grades or test scores, it is increasingly becoming the mark of leadership for teenage boys as they pass into college. While typical high school leadership positions like team captain, class president, or president of a major club may be more of a popularity contest than anything else, Eagle Scout is truly the main nationally recognized merit-based leadership award. There are no shortcuts in passing through each Scout rank, earning the required merit badges and completing an Eagle Scout project. Books have been written about the process and subsequent career paths of Eagle Scouts. One author referred to it as “the PhD of boyhood.” Major scholarships are available to only Eagle Scouts, which used to be available only to collegiate athletes, music prodigies and similarly uniquely talented students. Scouting and the rank of Eagle Scout allows youth who may not have these types of abilities to succeed and thrive, proving as teenagers they have what it takes to excel in college and beyond. As ESAA members, we have been through the process and seen the results through life of success at an early age. It is up to us to advocate for the Eagle Scout rank and all that it represents for our youth.

The purpose of the San Diego - Imperial Council Eagle Scout Alumni Association (ESAA) is to support and enlarge the success of the Boy Scout movement and build fellowship among adult Eagles in San Diego and Imperial Counties. The ESAA achieves this purpose, by recruiting as many adult Eagle Scouts as possible to become Scouting volunteers, by supporting activities within the Council that promote the Scouts' advancement along the Trail to Eagle and by giving recognition to the young men who earn the rank of Eagle Scout.
