Transparency in Teaching Improves Students’ Learning
When instructors implement transparent teaching methods, students’ overall learning increases, with notable benefits for underrepresented students. Dr. Mary-Ann Winkelmes at University of Nevada Las Vegas has been involved in the Transparency Initiative since its inception in 2010. The Transparency Initiative has determined that by implementing the following transparent teaching practices in introductory courses, an instructor can greatly benefit student learning:
- “Discuss assignments’ learning goals and design rationale before students begin each assignment.
- Gauge students’ understanding during class via peer work on questions that require students to apply concepts you’ve taught
- Debrief graded tests and assignments in class
- Explicitly connect “how people learn” data with course activities when students struggle at difficult transition points.”
For more specifics, read about the results of the study and how transparency in teaching can increase under-served students’ learning, or come to Dr. Winkelmes's talk and workshop during TeachWeek. |

CPET Certificates
The Certificate of Interest program aims to inspire participants to develop as educators through the submission of reflective journal entries addressing the content and application of teaching workshops and seminars.
The Certificate of Practice program aims to provide knowledge of teaching pedagogy and best practices to participants and help them apply their knowledge to their own teaching experiences with regular support and feedback from CPET and CTLO staff. Students completing the Certificate of Practice receive a special notation on their transcript recognizing their efforts and commitment to improving university teaching. If you are thinking about completing a Certificate of Practice during your time at Caltech, please contact CPET as soon as possible.
