Upcoming Events

On April 10th, Dr. David Asai will be presenting his talk entitled "Race Matters: Diversity and Inclusion in Science." A Caltech alum, Dr. Asai is the Senior Director of Science Education at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Dr. Asai serves on several advisory committees including the Minority Affairs Committee of the American Society for Cell Biology, the steering committee of Understanding Interventions, the AAAS Committee on Opportunities in Science (COOS), and the NIH Advisory Committee of the Director's Working Group on Diversity.

Teaching & Learning Research in a Nutshell

In From HHMI: Doubling Down on Diversity (2016), Dr. Asai and Dr. Bauerle examine the underrepresentation of minorities in postsecondary STEM classes and the leaky STEM pipeline, particularly for underrepresented minorities (URMs). To double the persistence of URMs in STEM by 2025, they make 3 main suggestions: 1) insist institutions take responsibility for creating inclusive campuses, 2) leverage successful models through adaptation and adoption, 3) align strategies across the STEM ecosystem.
CPET Certificates

The Certificate of Interest program aims to inspire participants to develop as educators through the submission of reflective journal entries addressing the content and application of teaching workshops and seminars.
The Certificate of Practice program aims to provide knowledge of teaching pedagogy and best practices to participants and help them apply their knowledge to their own teaching experiences with regular support and feedback from CPET and CTLO staff. Students completing the Certificate of Practice receive a special notation on their transcript recognizing their efforts and commitment to improving university teaching. If you are thinking about completing a Certificate of Practice during your time at Caltech, please contact CPET as soon as possible.

Association of American Universities (AAU)
Caltech is one of twelve universities to be awarded a mini-grant from the Association of American Universities for undergraduate STEM education! At Caltech, the grant will support a pilot, two-year effort to bring first-year advisors, faculty, and teaching assistants (TAs) from the courses with the most impact on first-year learning—Core and “pseudo-core”—together to explore and implement inclusive teaching practices.

CTLO Director, Cassandra Horii, was recently elected as President of the POD Network in Higher Education—the premier organization for teaching and learning centers in North America!
