Welcome to Issue 46 of insidetrack

I’m delighted to be able to bring this month’s insidetrack to you with such fantastic announcements as we launch new initiatives and continue to deliver our traditional sequence of events and activities.

First of all, FISITA PLUS is a new FISITA conference enabling our organisation to contribute to the fast evolving dialogue regarding the advancement of technology and the mobility agenda. We have such a great network of thought leaders within the international technology space, it seems logical and strategically correct for us to provide this platform and welcome a new audience to the world of FISITA.

We have also issued ‘save the date’ information to Honorary Committee members ahead of this year’s Summit that will be held in Geneva, with a title of ‘Clearing the air; creating a path to sustainable mobility’. Registrations have also opened for our annual EuroBrake conference and we were delighted to see our colleagues at SAEINDIA hold a very successful press conference in Chennai to mark the commencement of plans and communications regarding FISITA 2018 - the World Automotive Congress, which we are all looking forward to next year.

I was personally delighted to host the first FISITA Technical Webinar last week; it was my honour to welcome GM’s Michael Siegrist as our very special guest speaker. It was a really great session, well attended by many FISITA members around the world, and provided an excellent platform from which to launch this new monthly, member benefit. Watch this space for more confirmed speakers over the coming weeks and months and remember to hold the final Thursday of every month in your calendar as ‘FISITA Webinar Day'!

Finally, I hope you can find time to watch the short film made by FISITA Travel Bursary recipient, Victoria Ryan – it’s great to hear from her and a really neat reminder of how the Bursary supports the flow of young engineers into our world, something we should all be extremely proud to support.

All the best
Chris

FISITA launches Technical Webinar series
Chris hosting the first Technical Webinar at FISITA HQ
We are excited to have launched the first FISITA Technical Webinar, delivered live and exclusively to FISITA Member Societies, our Honorary Committee and the Friend for Life community.

The Technical Webinar series is a unique opportunity for the FISITA community, offering participants the chance to hear CEOs, CTOs, chief engineers and other senior industry figures present best-practice, industry knowledge and key insights to a live audience.

Our first guest speaker was Michael Siegrist, Assistant Chief Engineer at General Motors, who spoke about their opportunity for light-duty diesel in the North American market. Michael's presentation was very well received and generated some excellent questions from participants.

The next webinar will take place in April and the guest speaker will be announced soon. We encourage our members to promote these sessions to their members and if you would like to propose a guest speaker, please contact Patrick Carpenter at p.carpenter@fisita.com.
Save the date for FISITA's Summit
This year our World Automotive Summit will take place in Geneva, Switzerland from 7-8 November 2017. The prestigious event, aimed exclusively at members of the FISITA Honorary Committee, brings together visionary leaders from industry, government and research to discuss key developments, issues and opportunities around this year’s theme, “Clearing the air; creating a path to sustainable mobility.”

Key topics for the agenda include:

•    Economical and environmental impact
•    Regulatory activities and global regulations
•    Building an industrial strategy for sustainable mobility

Geneva offers an ideal setting for a culturally neutral and open-minded but provocative dialogue on the topic. As part of the Summit experience, delegates will also visit the CERN - one of the world’s largest and most respected centres for scientific research.

Honorary Committee members have been sent a save the date email and we'll keep you updated when registration is live and the full speaker line up is announced.

A key development this year is the creation of a number of sponsorship opportunities, which will generate valuable brand visibility for a select number of organisations throughout the delivery of the Summit. Please click below to view the sponsorship opportunities booklet; you can also contact Anthony King at a.king@fisita.com to discuss the remaining packages.

SAEINDIA hold FISITA 2018 press conference
Mr. K. Venkataraj, Dr Aravind Bharadwaj, Dr. Pawan Goenka and Mr. N. Balasubramanian
Our colleagues at SAEINDIA held a successful press conference earlier this month, to launch the Call for Papers for FISITA 2018.

Members of the FISITA 2018 Steering Committee spoke with a number of journalists in Chennai, India, which led to articles in The Hindu, Autocar Professional and The Business Standard

Speaking to the press, Dr. Pawan Goenka, FISITA 2018 Patron and Managing Director of Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd, said: "We are proud to host the 37th edition of the FISITA World Automotive Congress in Chennai, India. Report from CONAT 2016
Thanks to our colleagues at SIAR in Romania for sharing information and images from the International Congress of Automotive and Transport Engineering (CONAT) 2016. The congress was organised by SIAR, in collaboration with SAE International, under FISITA patronage, and hosted by Transilvania University of Brasov.

In the plenary sessions, a number of important automotive topics were addressed by keynote speakers from academia and manufacturing companies including:
  • Mr. Pascal Candau (Renault Technologie Roumanie)
  • Dr. Peter Pleus (Schaeffler AG, Germany)
  • Prof. Corina Sandu (Virginia Tech, USA)
  • Prof. Cornel Stan (University of Zwickau, Germany)
  • Mr. Gerolf Strohmeier (AVL List, Austria)
Accompanying the technical sessions, a dedicated workshop focused on "Collaboration in the Horizontal Automotive Industry", featuring some great discussions from participants and speakers in academia and industry. The exhibition also provided a great opportunity for organisations to interact with potential customers, suppliers and fellow engineers, and to take advantage of the fast-growing Romanian automotive market.

As part of the congress, there were three special sections dedicated to students and young engineers: the student's conference, featuring student papers, a contest for technical abilities and the final stage of the National Contest for Students in Automotive Engineering (within the field of Vehicle Dynamics).
