Welcome to Issue 42 of insidetrack

I wrote a short piece for the FISITA blog just ahead of the World Automotive Congress, FISITA 2016, which was held in Busan, South Korea, back in September.

At that time I was mindful of the responsibility that me, my FISITA team colleagues and our friends at KSAE had in delivering a quality Congress and continuing the FISITA tradition of bringing our international technical community together – a tradition upon which our organisation was founded back in 1948 and an event that has been held every other year since. No pressure then.

Of course, the entire week was a terrific success, thanks mainly to the wonderful efforts of the KSAE team and the various committees and groups who delivered the event, but also due to the positive intent of all the delegates, speakers and exhibitors, which ensured such high quality technical content.

This month’s newsletter reflects upon FISITA 2016 and is therefore a ‘special edition’ focussing purely on events in Busan back in September.

I hope you enjoy looking back over some of the highlights of the Congress as much as I have. It’s a great reminder of the role that FISITA plays in the continued development of safe, sustainable and affordable mobility for the world’s population, and testament to what can be achieved when we work together in the spirit of cooperation and collaboration.

Needless to say, my nervousness ahead of the event soon disappeared as we contributed towards its success and left me with a sense of pride upon its conclusion – it certainly was a great team effort.

Thanks to you all.

All the best
Chris

A successful FISITA 2016
It's now over a month since we returned from Busan, Korea - the location for FISITA 2016. We're pleased to report back that Congress was a tremendous success, attracting over 1,800 participants from 33 countries.

The Korean Society of Automotive Engineers (KSAE) were outstanding hosts and Prof. Kwang Min Chun, Chair of the Local Organizing Committee, ensured the technical programme was of the highest quality, which featured over 500 presentations, focusing on the Congress title, Creative Thinking for Future Automobiles. Programme highlights included two well-attended Plenary Sessions, which attracted lots of interest and discussion from the audience, as well as a number of Executive Tracks and forums, that were organised by Congress sponsors. If you would like to access the entire programme, with abstracts, the Congress Proceedings are available to purchase from the FISITA bookstore here.

This year’s Congress featured a number of programmes and initiatives specially designed for students and young engineers: the Student Congress, Travelling Fellowship and Islands of Excellence. We're pleased to say that those who took part made some valuable industry connections and lifelong friends - a reunion is already being planned. You can see some of the photos of the Travelling Fellowship activities in the FISITA 2016 photo library below.

The social activities were not restricted to students and young engineers - KSAE prepared an inviting programme of social events and cultural visits for all delegates, the highlight of which was a spectacular Gala Dinner, which included a guest performance from Murli Iyer, FISITA's VP Americas - see below for photos from the event.

The Closing Ceremony provided an excellent conclusion to Congress, where delegates were presented with a video summary from the event. For those that weren't there, you can view this video below - a great compilation from Busan!

As reported last month, we also welcomed Dan Nicholson, Global Propulsion Systems Vice President, GM, to his role as FISITA President in the Closing Ceremony. FISITA CEO Chris Mason said: "His experience and status within the automotive mobility industry will be a major asset to FISITA and our members. I have been working closely with Dan since he became President-Elect two years ago and we both share an exciting vision for the development of FISITA’s activities in the future."

We now look ahead to FISITA 2018, which is being organised by SAEINDIA and will take place at the Chennai Trade Centre, India, from 3–6 October 2018. Further information about this will be published in insidetrack at a later date.

Dr. Pawan Goenka awarded FISITA Medal
It was an honour to award Dr. Pawan Goenka with the FISITA Medal at Congress, in recognition for his outstanding contribution to automotive engineering. In particular, the Nominations Committee were keen to recognise Dr. Goenka’s leadership in transforming Mahindra & Mahindra’s Engineering and R&D capability and the subsequent growth of its automotive business and global footprint.

FISITA President (2014-2016) Paul Mascarenas presented the Medal to Dr. Goenka as part of the Opening Ceremony at Congress. He said: "I was delighted to present this year’s FISITA medal to Dr. Goenka - a truly worthy winner, who has given so much time to help develop our industry. In addition to his commercial success, Dr. Goenka has provided outstanding support to students and young engineers, having helped establish the Mini - BAJA competition for undergraduate engineers."

The FISITA Medal is the highest honour which FISITA can bestow. It is awarded in recognition of particularly distinguished achievement and leadership in the automotive industry. Over the years, some of the most illustrious names in automotive history have been FISITA Medallists including Giovanni Agnelli, Dante Giacosa, Hans List, Francois Michelin, Wolfgang Reitzle, Shoichiro Toyoda, Carlos Ghosn and Prof. Helmut List.

Dr Goenka gained his PhD in mechanical engineering from Cornell University and has contributed to many research publications. He continues to be recognised among academic circles for papers he wrote nearly 40 years ago on engine lubrication and tribology to name a few.
Local Knowledge & Best Practice at Congress
Amelie Gong
Prof. Kwang Min Chun
FISITA successfully organised the second of its Local Knowledge & Best Practice presentations for our Member Society colleagues attending Congress. The session was be led by Amelie Gong, FISITA's VP Internal Relations and featured a fascinating insight into the activities being organised by FISITA Member Societies around the world. We would like to thank the following people for taking part in this session, which provided valuable discussion, including debates on women in engineering (this will feature a future insidetrack) and initiatives for young people:
  • Dr.-Ing. Karl Siebertz, VDI-FVT Advisory Board Member, VDI
  • Dr. Aravind Bharadwaj, President, SAEINDIA
  • Prof. Kunsoon Huh, Vice President, KSAE
FISITA 2016 Local Organising Committee Chair, Prof. Kwang Min Chun, also delivered a Local Industry Presentation, which provided attendees with comprehensive information on the Korean automotive mobility sector.

These sessions were introduced by the FISITA Internal Relations Committee and bring together representatives from FISITA’s Honorary Committee members and Member Societies to share knowledge and best practice. We look forward to organising further Local Knowledge & Best Practice presentations at FISITA events in the future - if you would like to take part in one of these sessions, please contact Kelly Williams, Director of Member Services, at k.williams@fisita.com

FISITA's Automotive Engineering Education Forum
FISITA 2016 delegates attended a special Automotive Engineering Education Forum (AEEF), which addressed crucial issues for engineering education, from both education and industry perspectives. Led by FISITA CEO Chris Mason and FISITA's VP Education Luděk Hynčík, the Forum brought together a panel of leading figures from the automotive industry and academia, including a recent engineering graduate, who were all asked to answer the following question:

"Is the gap between industry needs for multiskilled engineers and the current supply of graduate engineers widening?"

The panel included:
  • Min Taek Kim, Hyundai Automotive Research Center, Korea
  • Radu Mavrodin, President of HR Club, Romania
  • Prof. Klaus Augsburg, Vice-Rector for Science, Technische Universität Ilmenau, Germany
  • Dr. K. C. Vora, Sr. Dy. Director & Head, The Automotive Research Association of India Academy
The overwhelming conclusion was that the gap is widening but there are many ideas and initiatives that could help to close this gap as long as industry and academia take steps to work together. Commitment should come from not only industry and academia but also the students and public and governmental bodies – FISITA recommends via agreement with relevant committees, developing activities and objectives to deliver against these aspirations.

A summary of the AEEF has been compiled in a paper that can be downloaded below.

Islands of Excellence at FISITA 2016
The Islands of Excellence are platforms for academic institutions and their students to demonstrate their innovative automotive engineering projects to the many engineers, industry executives, academics and fellow students who attend the Congress. Developed from the 2008 Congress in Munich, the initiative is firmly established as a thriving global networking opportunity for students, academia and industry professionals.

At FISITA 2016, the there were four Islands of Excellence finalists and the teams displayed their research within the exhibition, giving them the chance to speak with Congress delegates about
their projects. The short video clips below are from a representative from each Island.
