Issue 29 | August 2015

Welcome to Issue 29 of insidetrack

This edition of insidetrack is issued at the height of the summer holiday season, with a headline focus on the FISITA World Automotive Summit to be held in London in November.

The Summit is an impressive event, which quite rightly occupies a space within the landscape for technical leaders around the world. It embodies the decades old ethos of FISITA - to come together to share, and the collaborative nature of our membership. We purposefully limit the number of delegates to 100 in order to retain its exclusivity and a sense that we are creating a conference for our own, not for commercial gain or with intention to upscale, more to provide a quality member service which meets with our members expectations on an annual basis.

To do so, each year a small working group develops a programme of significant interest to our corporate members, the FISITA Honorary Committee. Expert speakers are sourced and a full programme is created which allows members to explore their chosen theme with their industry colleagues and contemporaries in a non-competitive environment. This allows our members opportunity to develop ideas and thinking, learn from others and engage in discussion and debate as they wish. It goes without saying that I am very much looking forward to the event and contributing to the discussion.

As we look ahead, we should also find time to review our previous activities, which we can do with the publication of our Annual Review. Focussing on 2014, the Review provides an overview of the successful events FISITA delivered, reports on our education programmes and summarises our business framework.

We also have a call for registration for this year's Council meeting in September and some great news stories from members.

Finally, I'm delighted to be able to welcome Tim Allsopp to the FISITA head office team. Tim joins us as Director of Business Services and I am sure will become familiar to you over the coming months.

I hope you find insidetrack informative and I encourage you to get involved by providing any relevant information you think our broader members base would like to hear about to:
Josh Morrall | Communications Officer

New acquisition for ZF provides expertise for semi-autonomous driving

ZF CEO Dr. Stefan Sommer
FISITA Honorary Committee member ZF have set their sights on the future by acquiring the employees and multiple assets of German R&D company HDLE Gmbh. The acquisition consolidates ZF's expertise in the field of semi-autonomous driving and provides the company with additional driver assistance systems technology.

ZF will integrate the software development team from HDLE GmbH into its Corporate Research and Development department. Included in the deal are several test vehicles and development results which will enable ZF to put more emphasis on "surround view" technology, a key component of semi-autonomous driving that recognises dangers such as approaching cross traffic, nearby pedestrians and cyclists, and allows drivers to navigate tight spaces.

ZF's CEO Dr. Stefan Sommer said, "The new employees have a great deal of expertise and experience from projects for several passenger car and commercial vehicle customers. They are scarce on the market and perfectly complement our software development team at our Corporate Headquarters in Friedrichshafen."

Innovation is not a part time pursuit for ZF, it is embedded within the company as part of a systematic, progress-focussed strategy that also reacts to the needs of the consumer in different parts of the world. Infrastructure, cultural factors and on-road behaviour all impact on where developmental focus lies in different marketplaces, and ZF are alert to these differing needs.

You can find out more about ZF's R&D department in the most recent issue of the company's magazine, available here.

SAE International promote STEM and sustainability

Student teams from across the United States and Canada competed recently in the annual SAE Supermileage event, held at Eaton's Proving Grounds in Marshall, Michigan. 23 collegiate teams (17 from the U.S. and 6 from Canada) competed in the competition, designed to generate public awareness of high-mileage fuel economy and to promote automotive engineering as a career choice for students.

The competition challenges students to use advanced materials and their own creativity to achieve the best fuel economy over the 9.6 mile course at Eaton (6 times around the 1.6 mile test track). Teams are also rated on vehicle design, design execution, endurance and team attitude. Competing vehicles must have a single-occupant with a one-cylinder, four-cycle engine.

Kaley Zundel, Collegiate Programme Manager at SAE International, said, "The competition held annually at Eaton Proving Ground provides an opportunity for students to apply classroom theory in an exciting real world environment. Interacting with industry professionals is an added bonus."

This year's overall competition winners were the Université Laval from Quebec, Canada, who achieved a remarkable 2,098 miles per gallon (mpg). The team were awarded $1,500 and will be recognised at the SAE 2015 Commercial Vehicle Engineering Congress held from 6-8 October 2015 in Rosemont, Illinois.

Staci Kroon, President of Eaton Vehicle Group, said, "The students are so impressive with ingenuity and creativity. What they accomplish year after year with this competition is truly amazing."
