From the time we start crawling, we have a desire to go places and often going faster seems more intriguing and exciting. The process typically begins with a tricycle and usually is followed by a bicycle.
My first two-wheeler bike was a blue, one-speed stingray, powered by one enthusiastic kid. Amazingly, decades later, I remember riding through my childhood neighborhood on the long cushy banana seat with playing cards in the spokes for added noise and coolness.
The independence and joy of having my OWN BIKE filled my youthful days with an abundance of adventures.
Recently, I came across a 15-speed FUJI bike at a garage sale. Both tires were flat but it looked in good condition, so I offered twenty bucks. Sold!
Next step was to find a local bike shop to get me back on the road. In my search, I found "Bikes For The Likes Of Us
." As I entered the store, I smiled. It was obvious this was a family-owned business, they had a passion for biking and had a thriving business serving others with biking needs. It was as if I stepped back in time and was in the good ol' neighborhood with trusted friends.
The owner and his son welcomed me and asked how they could help. I mentioned I had bought a bike at a garage sale and it needed some work. My hope was the bike was worth salvaging. Darby, the owner, walked out to get the bike from my vehicle and said, "WOW, I haven't seen one of these in a really long time. This was one great bike in its day!" Score! I was thrilled.
A few days later, I picked up my bike and was ready to take to the road for a spin. As I pedaled along, I took in the beauty and sounds of nature. I waved to people in their front yards, joggers and neighbors who passed me in their cars.
Granted, the ride required effort, but the reward was worth it with the wind gently swept over my face as I cruised down the small hills and dodged low-hanging tree branches. Yes, I literally enjoyed dodged branches; such fun letting the kid come out and play.
In today's fast-paced world, people often travel in cars and planes. We may get to places quicker, but we can miss many special moments when the focus is on the destination and not the journey.
Why not slow down and chose to use a bike for as a means of transportation? Ride on! Take to the roads and bike with family members and friends. A friend shared how she and her boyfriend enjoy riding their bikes to a restaurant on their dates.
In addition to biking, walking is an excellent activity that I recommend for the exercise. The benefits of walking or biking include numerous quality of life markers as well as significantly reducing stress.
Let the kid in you soar again! Get back on a bike and have some fun seeing things from a different perspective. Please also remember to wear a helmet.
Until next month,
