It is not my attitude when I’m motivated,
rather my discipline and commitment
when I’m not
that determines my success.

When was the last time you REALLY wanted something so badly you were willing to do whatever it took to get it?  Perhaps it was being accepted into a certain college, getting a certain job, winning the heart of someone special or, perhaps, fighting for your life after receiving news of a health crisis.

The intensity of the quest is full of internal emotion.  Focus, commitment and discipline are three core ingredients necessary to achieve success.  Your thoughts, energy and attention are laser-like; fixated on achieving your goal.  The odds are increasingly in your favor when you pursue something with a passion.

Perseverance is defined as steady persistence in a course of action; a purpose; a state; etc.; especially in spite of difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement.
The 1992 Olympics 400 meter race with Derek Redmond demonstrates the ultimate description of perseverance in this video clip: When you don’t give up, you never fail.

Last month, my health club hosted the 2013-14 season opener for the Men's IRT (International Racquetball Tour).  Jose Rojas (#4) made history when he defeated Kane Waselenchuk (#1) on Saturday; then beating Rocky Carson (#2) on Sunday.  These two upsets provided some of the best racquetball rallies and games I've ever seen and, in thirty plus years I've seen a lot of racquetball!

To understand how truly amazing Jose played, you need to realize that Kane has not lost a match since 2008.  The sport has been dominated by Kane for years as only a few players have been able to win a single game against him.  Jose continued on the next day in a 2.5 hour battle with Rocky to win the game in an overtime tie-breaker - an amazing display of perseverance and athleticism on Jose's part.

Having played on the Women's Professional Tour, I can appreciate and relate to the training, commitment and discipline required to achieve such a physical, mental and emotional accomplishment.
Luck is found at the intersection of readiness and opportunity.  Training provides the tools and confidence.  The prepared person prevails.

After he won the finals I spoke with Jose and he said, "I have wanted this for a long time. I did everything necessary prior to today to prepare myself and I gave it my all on the court these past couple days.  My coaches helped me tremendously. God blessed me this weekend."
Although marketing schemes and movies portray overnight successes, anything and everything of true value takes time, energy and perseverance.  Losses aren't failures; they're stepping stones to success. Jose spent years walking on those stones and savored his long awaited victory.  You will enjoy this clip of one of his stepping stones: 2009 Video Kane vs. Jose.
