When was that last time you did something for the first time? Do you remember the feeling of taking that first step?
Everything begins with one step, then another, followed by another. There is a warrior within each of us that strives to be the best version of ourselves and this only happens when we step beyond our comfort zones.
I have organized a four-week walking challenge for the employees at my workplace this month. Because it is spring time and a time for renewal I called the challenge "Spring Into Action"
. There is nothing like a little competition to get your wellness on!
Participants are given wearable devices to track their daily steps. To successfully complete the challenge, participants must have a minimum of 8,000 average daily steps throughout the 4 -week challenge period.
Employees who successfully complete the challenge not only reap the health benefits but get to keep the wearable device as an award and incentive to continue to walk each day long after the challenge is over.
While at work, employees are encouraged to walk during their breaks and during their lunch time as well as before and after work. With 250 employees participating, and their family members too, a lot of lives are taking steps to enhance their quality of life - one step at a time.
It occurred to me that I could extend this challenge to my 1200-plus TCOY newsletter subscribers and their friends and family. The Spring Into Action
challenge could impact hundreds or possibly thousands of lives. It would be awesome to see so many lives transformed simply by taking a walking challenge!

Step it up! Take a walk and increase your time and distance with each week. Set a personal goal. Begin where you are and improve from there. Walk as if your life depends upon it because, in many ways, it does.

Because there are several variables, including weight, age and health, don’t be concerned about the speed or distance, focus on what you can do today and gradually increase your walking workouts. Starting is the first step and consistency is the goal.
A person walking at a brisk pace will be able to talk but not sing. So if you are singing while you're walking; you might want to pick up the pace. You can sing in the shower later.
How long should it take to walk a mile?
If you're inactive but healthy, start with mile-long walks at a pace of three miles per hour five times a week. Over the course of a month, gradually increase your distance to three miles at a pace of four miles per hour five times a week. If you are unable to walk that fast, walk a little farther.
Stairs provide an extra plus for increasing your workout. Seek out staircases over elevators and escalators. At home, throughout the day or during TV commercial breaks, get up and go up and down the flight of stairs. This outside the box thinking is how to develop the wellness mindset. If nothing changes, nothing changes!
It's time to put a little spring in your step - for the health of it! A person's health can be judged by what they take two of at a time - pills or stairs.
Always remember to drink plenty of water to hydrate your body. Happy Walking!
