Maintenance Required!

Nothing gets your attention like the red light on your car dashboard signaling "MAINT REQD".  When that little light flashed on in my car last month it was simply a reminder it was time for a routine oil change. However, when I took it in for maintenance the mechanic informed me I needed new rear brakes and rotors.

I find it interesting how oblivious we can be to small decreases in performance. My Highlander wasn't making any odd noises and appeared to be running fine - at least in my opinion.

My brakes were almost metal to metal and had I not taken the car for service I would not have known they needed to be replaced and some major damage would have occurred.  As for the front rotors needing to be replaced, once the mechanic pointed out the slight shimmering when I applied my breaks quickly, it was evident this was another issue that needed to be addressed.  Although he said it could wait a couple months, if necessary, once it was pointed out to me it drove me nuts.

The red light is a signal to talk to a mechanic as soon as possible; much like a symptom of disease is a signal that our body is talking to us saying, "Warning, something is wrong." What if that red light doesn't come on due to a malfunction? You could easily find yourself dealing with a major situation or crisis. Vehicles can be replaced but you have only one body so you need to maintain it carefully and routinely.

Do you feel overwhelmed, overworked and stressed out?  The most common symptoms could include: fatigue; forgetfulness; depression; anxiety; stomach issues; weight gain or loss.  Sound familiar?  Sadly, rather than paying attention to and acting on the warning signals, many people ignore them or apply a duct tape approach such as prescriptions, caffeine, alcohol or other temporary fixes. Beware, you can not fool the body.

Healthcare was never meant to replace maintenance and personal responsibility.  Consider my TCOY (take care of you) coaching program and lifestyle as an EXTENDED WARRANTY.

My Highlander is a 2006 model and it looks and runs like new. I've always done the routine maintenance because I want it too look good and last a very long time. I feel the same way about my body. TCOY (take care of you) is my lifestyle philosophy that I have developed into a coaching program for others.  It's easy to do but it’s also easy to not do.  It's not a matter of being interested; the key is you must be committed.  Rather than a short-term and immediate gratification mentality; the focus is long-term with enhanced quality of life in a multitude of ways.

Don't ignore warning signs.  They may seem subtle today but, like an iceberg, only the tip is on the surface.

Change is challenging, which is why it's so important to have a mentor; someone you trust to come along beside you to coach, empower and be a source of encouragement.

Knowledge is knowing, wisdom is applying that knowledge. Life is so much more than your eyes are seeing.  Remember the classic Kung Fu grasshopper scene from the TV series?

When the student is ready, the teacher will appear. Utilize my thirty plus years of coaching and real life experiences to enhance your well-being.  If you don't take care of your body, where will you live?

Until next month...TCOY!
